Having a wedding card box or wedding money box at your wedding can be a great way to keep all of your cards/money together to make sure they don’t get lost in the shuffle on your big day. This is a guide to making a wedding card box for your retro or vintage themed wedding.
– Cigar box (I prefer wooden, but you could also use a cardboard one) available from Amazon.com from $3 to $14 or at your local tobacco shop if you prefer a box that isn’t plain
– Card stock
– Ink and letter stamps, calligraphy pen, or printer
– Mod Podge
– Floral/Vintage/Retro fabric that matches your other wedding decor
– Wide, flat paint brush
– Spray paint or acrylic paint in white or another color from your wedding color palette and the fabric that you chose (optional)
– Piece of paper
– Soft pencil or chalk
If you want to paint the outside of your box to make it less distracting or just to have it match your wedding more, the first thing you need to do is paint the outside of the box. Be careful about paint getting on the bottom of the box if you are putting it on paper to dry; a better drying option is a canvas cloth or wax paper.
If there is already fabric stuck inside the cigar box, rip it out (mine came from a tobacco shop and had velvet in the bottom of the box). Use your piece of paper to make two patterns of the inside of the box, one for the top half, one for the bottom. Trace your pattern onto the back side of the fabric with your chalk and cut it out. Use your paint brush to apply a generous coat of Mod Podge to the back of the fabric and attach it to the inside of your box. This step can be really messy so try not to get any of the Mod Podge on the outside of the box because it may leave ugly fingerprints.
Next you will need to make a card to lean against the box that says “Cards”. If you have nice handwriting, write it out on a small piece of card stock using a calligraphy pen. Otherwise you can use letter stamps and ink or print it out using your computer. Estimated make time of the entire project is anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or possibly a little more if you factor in waiting for the paint to dry.
Another Vintage Wedding Card Box Idea
If this is too much work for you, another great wedding card box idea for a vintage wedding or a retro wedding is to use an old metal bird cage or any other type of decorative bird cage. The only work required for this method is to make the sign that says “Cards”.
