This year instead of purchasing expensive back to school accessories go green and gather the family around the kitchen table for a fun craft night. A personal journal is the fashion accessory that every student heads back to school with. Make your journal truly yours by making your own stylish fashion accessory journal. When I head back to the classroom as a substitute teacher I like to come prepared with a stylish journal that this year is made by me.
When Associated Content put out the challenge to create a stylish DIY back to school accessory, it gave me the opportunity to stop procrastinating and get creating a project that’s been percolating – a journal from all recycled materials found in the home.
Everything from the paper to fill the journal to the cardboard to the fabric to cover the journal was once used as something else. So not only is my back to school accessory journal unique to me it is also good for the planet and saves money.
The great thing about my stylish back to school accessory journal is that it is a free-form project. I will give you the basic outline on how to make your own stylish back to school accessory journal and from my outline you can let your creativity take flight.
Materials to make a stylish back to school accessory journal:
Fabric (I used an old apron that belonged to my grandmother. It was falling apart but I loved the fabric and the memories it held).
Embellishments (such as: old buttons, yarn, ribbon, appliqués, scrapbook brads or anything else that holds special memories to you).
Scissors, razor knife, spray glue, double-sided tape, ruler, tape measure, pencil, hole punch, ribbon and recycled paper.
To assembly the stylish school accessory journal:
Ask an adult to cut the sturdy cardboard with the razor knife to a size one inch larger around than the recycled paper that will fill the journal. Cut two for a front and a back.
With spray glue, spray the cardboard and fashion the fabric to the cardboard, cut away excess fabric. I lined the inside of the stylish school accessory journal with felt. Repeat for back.
With the embellishments decorate the cover of the stylish school accessory journal; get creative so when friends say WOW you can proudly proclaim “I made it”.
I chose to have my stylish back to school accessory journal bound at the top with ribbon. Or you can bring the journal to your local (FedEx-Kinko’s) and have them spiral bind the left side with the amount of paper you want.
Enjoy making your stylish DIY back to school accessory journal and I will see you in the classroom.
