It’s the eleventh week of the new season and the angry seas with the icy January seas in charge of it all.
Last episode on the Cornelia Marie, Jake, Phil’s son was caught stealing his father’s pain pills and admitted to Phil that he was an addict. Phil is very unhappy about catching Jake stealing his pills and told him that when they get home, Phil will go his way, and Jake can go another, and he never wants to see him again. He tells Phil that he gets sick and Phil wants to know why he is so sick, when he tells his father that he is an addict. Phil is shaking with rage and anger but has a calm moment as Jake tells him how sorry he is and how he never wanted this. Phil tells him he must go to treatment, which is the only way he can be helped. Phil asks him what he is going to when he goes home and Jake tells him that he will go to meetings. Phil agrees to go with him. They end the encounter with a hug. Then Phil cuts the rest of the trip short and heads toward St. Paul harbor.
On the Time Bandit, they are heading towards a forty pot prospect string hoping to hit the mother lode. Andy tells us that the only ice he wants to see is in his drink as they hope to redeem the season. The first pot has three hundred and ninety clean crabs in it, and the numbers keep going well. The boys celebrate with fireworks on deck and the Hillstrand brothers decide that they want to decide their future and soon. One of their deckhands is fifty-four years old and he takes a hard fall while trying to hold on to the sorting table. Andy and Johnathan compare him to Old Yeller and tell the crew that he is Andy’s dog and if he has to shoot him and put him down, he will do it. I’m sorry boy — boom!
On the Wizard the weather is blowing and it has taken Keith three weeks to find crab. Finally the pots show a wee bit of promise; but not enough to write home about. Keith starts his old friend, chewing tobacco, which he promised his kids that he would quit. So he phones home and talks to his daughter who gives him some good advice.
On the Northwestern, news about Jake’s father having been missing and his truck was found in a logging area with no signs of him has reached the fleet. Sig wants to talk to Jake and tell him what he has heard, but his mother would rather he stayed on the boat with his fishing family. There is nothing he can do anyway. Sig consults with his deckhand, Nick who is Jake’s uncle to see what he should do about telling Jake about his father. They decide that Jake should call home and he finds out that the truck was found, but no sign of his dad. His mother said that they would offer a reward for info about him, but she does not want Jake to worry. To this day, his father has yet to be found.
ON the way back to St. Paul, Phil laments about Jake’s condition. He says Jake has an addictive personality just like him. That Jake has been drinking a quart of booze a day and he has to make the decision to put that aside and grow up. Phil also lets us know that his boys did not have it too easy because he was never around and hopes he can get over that guilt.
The Time Bandit hits harbor to offload, Johnathan leaves to go marlin fishing in warmer waters. He does not want to return and talks again to Andy about the future of the boat. His son Scotty is the heir to the Hillstrand legacy, but they will wait till Johnathan comes back from vacation to see what their future holds. Andy calls Mike Fourtner up to the wheelhouse and asks him if he is interested in being the skipper of the Time Bandit. Mike is interested and knows that he will probably make enemies with his fellow crew members who feel that they are next in line.
As the Cornelia Marie is offloading their beautiful catch, Phil pulls out pictures of his boys when they were little. They have a few good laughs too when they see a picture of Phil with his Billy Ray Cyrus mullet haircut. Later when the offload is done, the skipper must sign off on it and Steve Ward, the engineer looks for Phil. He calls his stateroom but there is no answer. He comes looking for Phil and finds him face down and unresponsive in his room. Steve goes looking for Jake and Josh and calls 911. They sense that he has had a stroke because his left side is unable to move and they med evac him off the boat as the episode comes to a close.
