The Detroit Lions are much improved over their winless season of 2008 and could shake up the NFC North. This is not to say the Detroit Lions will win the NFC North but they will be a thorn in the side to the other three teams in the NFC North. The Detroit draft class is good one and will help them build on their improvements in the 2009 NFL season.
Matt Stafford Proved to His Detroit Lions Teammates He Was Their Leader
Matt Stafford proved to his team he was their quarterback for better or worse when he injured his shoulder and then came back to throw the game winning touchdown, in severe pain. Stafford threw for the game winner just seconds after writhing on the ground in pain. It will be a moment that will go down as a defining moment for the young quarterback.
The addition of Tony Scheffler from Denver at the tight end position, gives Matt Stafford a reliable target across the middle and Nate Burleson will fit well across from Calvin Johnson as a number two receiver for Stafford. The combination of Johnson and Stafford could be the beginnings of a Peyton Manning to Marvin Harrison type relationship.
Detroit Lions Will Have Solid Running Game to Keep Stafford Balanced
The Detroit Lions have Kevin Smith as their lead running back heading into camp but things may change once camp progresses. Smith is coming of an ACL injury he was stricken with in December and it is a cause for concern for the offensive staff.
Detroit drafted Jahvid Best out of California and they are expecting Best to carry some of the load for Kevin Smith. Best is an aggressive runner who loves to mix it up at the line of scrimmage. one problem with Best is that he has not played since his devastating concussion against Oregon State. The You Tube clip made it’s rounds before the NFL Draft and many teams passed on Best because they thought he was damaged goods.
Ndamukong Suh Will Not Only Be a Force on Defense He Will Also Be a Leader
The Detroit Lion Defense will have a completely different look in the 2010 NFL season. Two big defensive lineman move into Detroit, Ndamukong Suh and Kyle Vanden Bosch will be scaring offensive lineman all year for the Detroit Lions.
Ndamukong Suh was arguably the best physical talent in the NFL Draft. Suh, a defensive lineman from Nebraska, was all everything in college and he should adapt quickly to the NFL. Not only is Suh big, he is extremely intelligent.
Kyle Vanden Bosch is just big and mean. Many teams wanted Vanden Bosch but Detroit has him. Vanden Bosch is explosive off the line and will be a perfect compliment for Suh’s quickness. Vanden Bosch also brings much needed leadership to the Detroit defense. Don’t be surprised if the Detroit defense is one of the highest rated defenses in the NFL this year.
Detroit Lions are One Year Away From Contending For NFC North Title
The Detroit Lions are a 100-1 shot to win the Super Bowl according to the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook but that is an improvement over last year, when they began the season at 300-1 to win the Super Bowl. The Lions over/under win total according to the Hilton Superbook is five games. Detroit could win six and possibly seven games in the 2010 NFL season and that would be a successful season.
There is definitely more upside with the Detroit Lions than down side. The defense is developing into a hounding, menacing defense just like their defensive coach Gunther Cunningham and the offense is making steady progress. Detroit is a year away from anything special but they will be fun to watch.
