All roads lead to Democracy! Other systems are under increasing strain, rare that they have become! There is no second guessing what the common people want; they want to elect their leaders! But do they really do so or democracy is an illusion & the leaders get themselves elected, not the being the best choices available but due to factors that limit the ability of others to challenge them?
The US & other western countries have well-established norms & systems that are followed that allow clear choices being made on elections that are above board. But in most nascent democracies, the people have limited choices with the existing power centers difficult to dislodge. That means they are well-entrenched with others kept out by various factors; that limit the choices that should be the norm in democracies.
Democracies represent anarchy in some countries with hits below the belt like allegations made that cannot be proved. The media is also biased resulting in their being less than reflecting the actual facts but pursuing their own agendas. The truth becomes the biggest casualty with the general public becoming cynical. Also, sensationalism is resorted to, to boost their income without any accountability.
The bottom line is democracy is subverted by the few to gain personal advantage at the cost of the general public & national interests. The public has also limited options to dislodge the power centers. Money politics also play a big part and playing on the emotions of the people. Promises are easily made without a thought about the ability to deliver on them. Once elected, the efforts are to reward those who helped them without addressing the harsh issues that face the common man who hopes against hope for deliverance from his pitiable state.
Democracy is no panacea but gives hope & empowers the public. The main issue is the education levels in the poorer countries where the public can be hoodwinked by local, petty issues. The educated do not matter as they are a minority to make a real difference. They also feel outside the system, for stepping-in as leaders, as politics can descend into free-for-all, without limits – only those with a thick hide can take the hits & carry on as business as usual!
Despite these obvious stumbling blocks for effective governments, other systems cannot replace the elected governments. Autocracy is worse, as it is difficult to dislodge, like in North Korea. Cambodia lost quarter of its population under Pol Pot, with their own being the murderers, even own family members!
Democracy is to be preserved & cherished with a hope that the process would get better in the long run! Even China is getting more democratic letting-in fresh air to cool the tempers. But true democracy, like in the western countries, is still a way to go for most!
