Del Mar is the favorite among horse players, jockey’s, trainers and owners. The setting of Del Mar is like no other horse racing track in the world, where the turf meets the surf. The history of the track and the 1950’s feel of the paddock and the clubhouse draws horse racing fans to vacation in sleepy Del Mar and the surrounding beach cities every year.
This year Del Mar started off with a record crowd of 45,309 on Wednesday’s opening day but the next day there was cause for alarm during the first morning workouts early Thursday morning. The Polytrack was coming apart in several areas of the track, forcing morning practice to be canceled.
There Are 5 Solid Horses to Play on the 10 Race Card at Del Mar Saturday
Del Mar Race 2 Where’s the Remote 5-1 Morning Line
Where’s the Remote is running for the first time for new trainer Mike Mitchell. Playing a horse that races after a purchase or claim by Mitchell is occasionally an overplayed and overrated statistic but this time it is well worth the play on this 5-1 horse.
Call Me Honcho at 5-2 morning line odds, is the class of the field and may bring the best out of Where’s the Remote. My Boy Walsh could be a horse that hits the Del Mar board also. Walsh sets up well for this mile race and has finished well in the longest races.
Del Mar Race 4 Goonie Goo Goo 5-1 Morning Line
Del Mar Race Four is a sprint at six and a half furlongs and a maiden race to boot. Goonie Goo Goo figures to be just off the pace as they turn for home and it will take a strong kick to get around Dancing Tiger, a horse that adds blinkers after a rough go of it.
Phi Beta Heat should get a look for anyone betting exactas or trifectas. Phi Beta Heat is a morning line 8-1 shot but the odds should be about 20-1 or more at post time. Phi Beta Heat may not have what it takes to break through as a maiden but definitely deserves a look in the exotics.
Del Mar Race 6 Ruination 5-1 Morning Line
It looks like there is a pattern here with the 5-1 morning line horses but it is nothing planned. Ruination is a solid play and is the fastest horse in the field. Ruination could run this mile and a sixteenth race wire to wire if no other horse can latch on to her. Ruination is also coming off an allowance win and is moving up in class but her speed may trump all her negatives in this race.
Del Mar Race 7 The Phenom 9-2 Morning Line
The Phenom may live up to his name in his debut at Del Mar. The Phenom has been working well and posting sharp work out of the gate at five furlongs. Maiden races are tough to bet, especially when betting a 9-2 horse but The Phenom is worth a play to break his maiden on his first try as a two year old.
Del Mar Race 10 EZE Does It 6-1 Morning Line
Sorry to keep everyone for the tenth race but EZE Does It will be well worth the wait. No better place to hang out for the tenth race than Del Mar. EZE Does It is a great sprinter but he is expected to translate well on the turf course. At 6-1 EZE Does It is a horse that should sit on his superior speed until the final stretch. Once EZE Does It kicks into gear late, the field will fall to the wayside.
Standing in EZE Does It’s way is Otto Von Voom. Otto Von Voom should go off as the favorite and deservedly so. Otto Von Voom has won his last four Mile or over turf races but he moves up in class from $32,000 to $50,000 claimers.
