Throughout our country’s history there have always been issues with the borders and the protection and policing of them. In the past few years there has been an increasingly violent threat to the Unites States and our southern neighbor Mexico, one that has recently forced people living and working along these areas to carry weapons and arm themselves to protect their families and towns.
The threat I refer to is the bloody drug wars between rival cartels at the edge of Texas and Mexico, The number of people being caught in the crossfire is becoming an issue that needs to be dealt with before it stirs up more violent reactions from civilian bystanders.
Listening to the news I heard that farmers and ranchers with land along the border are actually recommended to carry weapons for protection. This is actually being suggested by the local sheriff’s dept, this since one local rancher was killed and a sheriff’s deputy was critically injured in a shootout with cartel members.
In Brownsville, TX this past weekend two rival cartels actually announced their intention to meet and do combat, giving warning to bystanders by leaving notices on vehicles that instructed people what colors not to wear to avoid identification as a potential target and to stay off the streets.
While there were still casualties across the border and in Brownsville as well the Mexican military has been patrolling the streets and flying across the area, even crossing into US airspace attempting to contain the problem.
Recently a training camp of one of the major cartels was raided. An unimaginable amount of military grade automatic weapons, rocket launchers, ammunition and more were confiscated along with money and vehicles,
The economic effect this issue is posing is also one that has harmed the local area. Stifling tourism into Mexico and the southern Texas area for fear of being caught in one of the outbreaks that are becoming a regular occurrence.
What is it going to take to keep our border safe. Local Border Patrol and Homeland Security have patrolled the border that stretches from California south, The idea for a border wall stretching across the Mexican border was an idea intended to stem illegal entrance into the US , but could also have uses as a military blockade.
As the violence continues to grow and with little chance of slowing down, the idea that we citizens should need to carry a weapon in order to feel safe or possibly protect the lives of our family and ourselves is becoming a more acceptable solution in lieu of recent reports.
What is your opinion on this subject? Should we exercise our right to bear arms in order to preserve our way of live and keep our borders safe? Feel free to comment.
