Last night’s American Idol was the final competition of the season and Simon Cowell’s last judging experience on Idol. Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersocks competed for the title of the next American Idol. Each contestant was to sing three songs. The first song they would sing would be their own favorite song from the season, the second would be a song chosen for them by Executive Producer Simon Fuller and the third song will be the song that they will release if they win.
Before the show there was a coin toss and Crystal won so she opted to go second so Lee was to go first.
There was a clip about how Lee’s parents thought he might be a baseball player and how he it changed to where he wanted to be a musician.
Lee’s first song was The Boxer. I loved it when he sang the song the first time, and I enjoyed it last night, but I am a bit worried that this song does not have huge wow moments and on this night against someone like Crystal you really need to wow. Randy said a great way to start it off dude. I am not sure it was a really nice energetic song, so pick it up and get some energy going. Ellen said she could not have been prouder if she had birthed him herself. She said she liked it the first time and liked it even better this time. Kara said he needs to punch a little harder, but he was connected to the song and it was believable. Simon said this is the big one and he expected more passion. He compared it to a kiss on the cheek or a kiss on the lips. I like the Lee really smiled a lot tonight. He has a nice smile.
There was a clip for Crystal that told about how she found a guitar in the closet and thought it was a gift for her and how her first gig was at a mall.
Crystal performed Bobby McGee which was a really good choice. This was one of her most memorable songs of the season. The beginning was an uneventful, but when she hit her stride towards the middle it started to look like Crystal was fighting for the title big time. This was a big energy song, sung with a big voice. Can’t help but think that was amazing. Randy said it started a little bit slow, but picked it up towards the middle and we saw the Crystal that we love, he also said I hope she makes a record like that and it is dope. Ellen said she is so compelling with her guitar, stunning, Kara said I loved it when you first did it and I loved it tonight. She also said Crystal had fire in her belly. Simon said that she was back on her best and that they had a competition tonight.
This was the round where the executive producer chose the songs. Lee performed everybody hurts. This is a great song for his voice, I don’t know if it was the right choice for the finale. Still he did a nice job, not perfect but good. I expected bigger songs for the finale is all but he was good. Randy said it started out pitchy but he pulled it together and he could feel the Lee that he loved towards the end. Ellen said he got in to it at times but pulled back at times and she wanted to see him get in to the song a little more. Kara said it was not a perfect vocal but he is very accessible and that is a good thing. Simon agreed that it was not a perfect vocal and while it was good he really wanted to see a 10 out 10 out of him on the last vocal.
Crystal’s second song was Black Velvet. She started out really strong, she looked kind of awkward because they had her coming down the stairs in high heels. That always worries me and I am sure that it kind of scares them too when they are in heals, I am always afraid they are going to fall. But while her body language was showing caution you would not know that from her voice, she sang really powerfully through the entire song, and even hit the last note which is normally kind of soft sultry with power. Randy called her Mama Socks and then said Momma socks is in it to win it, and that was hot. Ellen mentioned the stairs then said it was fantastic. Kara said she did what that night was all about and hit everything hard. Simon said although he has heard that song a million times and is almost sick of it but she really nailed it and that is was really good.
The final song by Lee is the one he will record if he wins. Who are we kidding though? He is going to record something weather he wins or loses. He sang Beautiful Day, I was surprised it was not an original song as usually someone writes a special Idol song for the winner; it was also a different song than Crystal performed. I think he hit a couple of rough notes in the beginning I think he was getting a little emotional because his eyes were all watery. There was a point I could tell that he was looking out in to the audience and he just kind of smiled a smile that said, “This is just so cool and amazing.” I thought that was really cool and what I love about Lee. Towards the end of the sing he was really hitting his stride and his confidence and performance over came his emotion, I think it was a good last song for him in the competition. Randy said it was awkward when he was walking around because that is not what he does , but when he hit the middle it was amazing, Ellen said he was fully present for that song, and she is very proud him. Kara had to ruin the good momentum and said he got swallowed up a bit by that song but that he has a very commercial voice and deserves to be here. Simon said that this is what this competition is for and that he truly wishes the best for him.
Crystal’s final song was Up To the Mountain. I don’t know if this was an original song or not I have never heard it before. She sat at the front of the stage and just sang to the crowd the choir backed her up but they didn’t need to be there she could have carried this all on her own. It was like seeing a professional artist just sitting and performing for her fans. It was really truly a brilliant performance. I don’t know if it is a good song for radio but I could watch her perform this a hundred times. Randy said this is what this show is all about and amazing song by an amazing singer that was incredible. Ellen said she is very unique and in a league all her own, and she will buy her album and would see her on tour and that she is very proud to be seeing the rising of her career. Kara said her walls are normally up, but she she totally emotionally invested in that song and it was amazing. Then Crystal thanked Simon for all his help and wished him best in his future endeavors. Simon then said it was the best song of the night and on the last critique he would ever give it was outstanding.
There was a tribute video to the season at the end of the show and Europe’s first Pop Idol winner Will Young performed Leave Right Now as the video played. What a beautiful voice he has.
Last week it looked like Lee would take it all but after last night’s performances I am not so sure. Crystal really, really brought it last night. She was truly incredible not that Lee wasn’t good but she was just amazing. As I have said before I don’t think it matters who wins tonight. I honestly believe that both Lee and Crystal are going to have brilliant careers.
Tonight’s show will announce the winner and will also include a tribute to Simon Cowell as it will be his last appearance on American Idol.
