Creative Ways to Decorate with Winter Squash

by itchyfish

Winter squash is very versatile, and the many creative uses go far beyond ordinary vegetable dishes. It can be used in many creative ways for centerpieces, candleholders, and unique decorative displays. Try these unique and creative ways to use winter squash, and turn ordinary hard-shelled garden vegetables into beautiful works of homegrown art.

Make Unique Fall Candleholders

Winter squash of all varieties can be used to make interesting seasonal candleholders. Kabocha squash is an excellent choice. This variety is mottled and sits flat on the base. The size and shape is perfect for this creative decorating technique. Carefully cut out the core with a serrated knife, and use an apple corer to hollow it out to accommodate a votive candle or a narrow pillar candle. Place it on a stylish candle tray or a plate, and light the candle to create a vibrant fall display.

Set up a Beautiful Fall Centerpiece

Use winter squash to create a beautiful fall centerpiece. Instead of simply placing winter squash in a bowl, arrange it on a decorative serving platter along with eye-catching faux leaves. Wash it and apply a coating of citrus oil to enhance the color and shine the surface. After applying the citrus oil, use it for decorative purposes only.

Make Scrollwork Designs on Butternut Squash

One of the most creative ways to use winter squash involves carving, but not all the way through the outer shell. Use a nail to make scrollwork designs on butternut or other light-skinned winter squash. Apply acrylic paint over the surface in a color of your choice, and wipe the surface with a damp rag or sponge. This will remove the paint from areas that have not been carved. Place it on a decorative dish, candle tray, or a serving platter for a creative and eye-catching display.

Decorate with a Lovely Candle Display

Candles can be combined with winter squash for a creative fall display. Pair ordinary pillar candles in varying heights with colorful winter squash such as buttercup or turban. Arrange them on a tray with other natural items including pinecones, acorns, and pretty fall leaves. Make sure these items are a safe distance away from the wick, and light the candles for a lovely display that can be used for a number of celebrations and occasions.

Use these and other creative ways to decorate with winter squash. It really is good for more than just simple side-dishes. The natural beauty of these fall garden veggies can become a part of the autumn décor.
