The Sundance Channel’s documentary, “Crazy Love”, is a story about domestic abuse and reconciliation. This story is one very bizarre instance of someone going to extremes when a relationship breaks up. Then goes on to become even more bizarre as forgiveness comes into play. This is nothing new, this story happened in the 1950’s.
Linda Riss, a young and beautiful girl falls in love with a married man and soon gets tired of his empty promises that he will leave his wife. Burton Pugach, a young New York self made millionaire lawyer is the object of Linda’s love.
Pugach, who professes to truly love Riss, gets infuriated when Linda decides to break off their relationship because she is tired of waiting for him to get that divorce. A few months down the road, Pugach, still in love with Linda, finds out she is engaged to another guy.
Pugach hires a couple of guys to go to Linda’s home and throw lye in her face, which blinded her. If he couldn’t have her he did not want anyone else to have her.
Pugach was arrested for his crime of passion and was sentenced to prison for 30 years. He served 14 of those years. Linda, on the other hand was dumped by her fiancé after he saw the extent of her facial disfiguration, according to the NY Post.
Pugach was released from prison and through mutual friends, met up with Linda again. In a few months they were married and have been together happily for over 30 years.
Most people feel shocked by this reunion, as I did when I first watched the documentary. Wouldn’t this be a daily reminder for this woman of how she lost her sight? She was only 22 years old at the time her vision was taken from her in such a violent and calculated way.
Linda Riss’s reunion with this man is an extreme case of this domestic abuse phenomenon, where the abused somehow wants to overlook what happens and goes back with their husband or boyfriend.
Many were in shock when Rihanna went back to Chris Brown according to People Magazine. Somehow, Rihanna was able to rationalize Brown’s behavior and go back to him. Another case of the woman willing to overlook what had happened to her because she was in love.
Another Hollywood couple was Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. Whitney had admitted to years of abuse on Oprah, according to ABC News, but still went back to him. She has been seen recently out partying with him according to Celebitchy website. Can she forget the fact that he spit on her and dragged her around their home?
This turn around of taking the abuser back, does not always take a long time. Jenna Jameson alleges Tito Ortiz physically abused her on a Monday morning. She had him arrested, took out a restraining order, and by Monday afternoon she was telling the media she wanted to work things out with him, according to TMZ.
This has been going on for as long as people have been keeping written records. The urge is so intense for that love they think they feel for the abusers, that even a woman blinded for life would consider going back to the man that caused it.
