The story which fascinated the country and had so many people shaking their heads in disbelief has now come to a startling end: The saga of the young Craigslist killer is over as he hung himself early Sunday morning in his cell.
It would have been the day of his first anniversary with the lovely woman who adored and trusted him…. That was before his true nature came to light and the wedding was called off days after his June arrest.
I guess today looking in the mirror he saw a monster and realized all the terrible things he had done to destroy several families and his own life. Then it was over for . Quickly and quietly the aspiring doctor offed himself.
According to the AP news:
…..The Suffolk County district attorney says in an e-mail all evidence indicates 24-year-old Philip Markoff killed himself. Markoff was found unresponsive in his cell at the Nashua Street Jail on Sunday morning. He was declared dead at about 10:15 a.m.
Here’s how it all played out:
Phillip Markoff was an extremely unlikely suspect to be accused of murder and robbery.
He was a very attractive, extremely bright young man who was about to finish medical school in Boston. He had a gorgeous girlfriend, he had fabulous prospects for the future. But he also had a very dark secret. He was a compulsive gambler and dabbled in strange sex websites. ( He advertised that he wished to be dominated on a Sado- Masochistic themed website.). In real life, he set out to rob and dominate several young women advertising on Craigslist ‘s exotic services sections.
First he met a young stripper on Craigslist and he managed to pull off the robbery in ease. He stole her money and her panties, then left her tied up in a nice hotel room she had paid for.
The next few robberies didn’t go as planned.
Julissa Brisman, of New York, was his next intended victim and unfortunately she must have fought back. Markoff bludgeoned her with his gun and then shot her three times. He walked out of the fancy Boston hotel room calmly and left his image on their security cameras. His only attempt at disguise was a baseball cap.
Still after that he could not stop. To fuel his inner demons and his penchant for taking his girl to gamble at fancy casinos in Connecticut, Markoff attempted to rob a third woman in the same manner.
Her husband just happened to be downstairs waiting for a cell phone call which was their signal that the” pay for service ” John employing her for a lap dance was OK.
When the husband didn’t get the call, he attempted to intervene, and scared off Markoff.
So with all the evidence coming in, the cameras, the emails, the cell phone records, the living strippers able to ID him, Markoff was located and arrested within a few weeks.
And in his devastated trail, he left the family of beautiful college student and model Julia Brisman wondering how this could have happened— a man you just would never expect— and the knowledge that their daughter was dabbling in such a dangerous way to make a few bucks.
He traumatized the other two women and maybe now they have decided that exotic services is way too risky a way to make some quick cash. Or maybe not.
He left the family of his fiance reeling. From a prominent Long Island family, she never asked for this. She was not a voyeur or a swinger or famous. She was a fine girl who thought she had met the prince charming she deserved, not a Jekyll and Hyde killer.
And of course he own family, who were nice upper middle people from all reports, who supported and pushed their son in a noble profession. What was their crime? Nothing. Like any Psychotic killer, it is hard to know what when wrong and why.
But now he is dead, and he has at least saved the taxpayers a trial and millions of dollars to house and feed him if he was found guilty.
The Craigslist killer at least had the decency to save his family and the taxpayers from a long trial.
But you can’t help but lament all the sadness and wasted lives here.
