If you kids like to paint, they are going to love painting with this homemade puffy foam paint. Puffy foam paint is a paint that dries raised from the paper. It dries to a plastic-like finish and is quite decorative. You can use this puffy foam paint to add raised texture to paintings. You can also use it to make raised designs on greeting cards or decorative objects like photo frames. Read some of my tips on how to use this paint at the end of this article.
To make homemade foam paint, you just need three ingredients: white glue like Elmer’s glue, white shaving cream, and food coloring. Mix equal parts of glue and shaving cream for each color of paint you want. Then add a drop or two of your desired choice of food coloring and mix with a toothpick or craft stick. You can start with 1/4 cup each of white glue and shaving cream and see how far that goes. If you want a smaller amount, you can use an ice cube tray to make little bits of lots of colors. You can also make different shades of a certain color by adding a bit more food coloring to certain portions of the paint. You can also create new colors by mixing the food coloring.
After you have your paint mixed, let it set for 2 minutes. Then use it as you would any craft paint. You can paint the puffy foam paint on to your surfaces using any paint brush or you can even try using your fingers if you like. You can pile the paint on to make raised textures or you can flatten the paint to make glossy flat surfaces. No matter how you use it, you will love painting with this homemade puffy foam paint!
Ideas for using your homemade puffy foam paint:
Snow Covered Christmas cards: Use plain white puffy foam paint to add snow details to any Christmas card. You can add the paint to the trees that are depicted on the card or you can make little raised dotted snowflakes all over the card.
Decorative Photo Frames: Take any plain photo frame and personalize it by writing someone’s name on the frame. You can also add other details like flowers, butterflies, hearts, etc. Then add your favorite photo to the frame.
Holiday Ornaments: Use puffy foam paint to add decorative touches to holiday ornaments like Christmas ornaments, Easter eggs, Valentine’s Day hearts and so much more! You can add the paint to existing ornaments that you already own, or you can cover styrofoam shapes with puffy foam paint to create new ornaments. Don’t forget the glitter!
