It’s time for summer sunshine, and you should be wearing a pretty straw hat. If your hat is sturdy but drab and boring, you can change that with this easy DIY summer craft project. Simply call up your summertime craftiness; and with less than a yard of fabric, you can create a brand new colorful life for an old straw friend.
-Old straw hat or an inexpensive hat from a craft or dollar store.
-Glue – Glue gun 0r ‘Tacky’ glue
-Optional – Shells or cabochons (flat backed beads)
-1/3 yard of fabric
-Glue gun and sticks
Wide, Soft-Pleated Band
-Lay fabric flat, printed side down.
-Fold raw edges to meet in the middle. (fig 2 )
-Add a a bit of glue to keep folds in place.
-Gather one end of fabric and position on hat, print side down. (fig 2 )
-Facing the back of the hat, glue gathered end in place slightly to the left of the crown’s mid point.
-Drape fabric around the hat.
-Glue in place at the bottom of the crown.
-Tighten fabric so it fits but loose folds remain .
-Cut away all but 1 inch of excess fabric.
-Remove loose threads.
-Fold raw edge under.
-Glue into place.
Add a Twist
Instead of removing excess fabric, twist and knot it like hair. (fig 3)
Glue into place as you go, and to hold final knot in place.
Wide Pleated Band
-Create a few lengthwise pleats (like cummerbund folds) leave two inches on each side.
-Lay pleated fabric print side down.
-Fold 2 inch edges over, then iron.
-Glue one end to the middle back of your hat, print side out.
-Glue bottom edge around the hat.
-Fold and glue a narrow hem at the remaining end.
-Glue into place over the first end.
-Add button or bow for trim.
-For a different look, start and end band at right or left side (like a traditional man’s hat)
Urban Summer Turban Hat
-Fold over and iron one lengthwise edge of your fabric.
-Place the center of your fabric at the center front of your hat, print side out.
-Glue bottom fabric edge around the base of the crown.
-Gather fabric at back of hat (fig 4)
-Knot excess fabric and glue into place or…
-Cut away all but a few inches of excess fabric, fold decoratively into place and glue.
Simple Wide Band
Cut fabric six inches wide and long enough to go around the base of your crown with a few inches left over.
-Lay fabric print side down
-Iron 1 inch of fabric lengthwise on each side.
-Make adjustments for a shallower crown.
-Glue band into place at the bottom of the crown.
-Finish rear like a Wide Pleated Band. (fig 4)
Scrunched Down Narrow Band
-Follow instructions for the Simple Wide Band
-Scrunch the band down all the way around to make it narrower.
-Glue into place. (fig 4)
For added accents, glue shells or beads to any band or to a plain hat.(fig4)
