This very cute watermelon themed miniature lampshade is great for a child’s bedroom or a country themed space. Makeover an existing lamp by changing its shade or create an entirely new piece by starting with a plain ceramic or unfinished wooden lamp.
For this project you will need (per lampshade):
– Miniature paper lampshade (available at craft supply stores)
– Coordinating lamp
– Iron and ironing board
– Green cotton fabric
– Bright pink cotton fabric
– Black cotton fabric
– Fabric marking pen
– Fabric scissors
– Craft roller
– Krylon Spray Adhesive
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Due to a few messy portions involving paint and spray adhesive in this project, it is highly advised to cover your work area with a few sheets of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth before starting. Place the miniature paper lampshade flat. Spray the outside with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the shade set for around an hour before proceeding. Paint the shade with two to three coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White. Dry overnight. (NOTE: If you are working with an unfinished wooden lamp or ceramic lamp, these painting steps can be done at the same time as the lampshade.)
Use a warm iron to smooth out the pieces of green cotton fabric, bright pink cotton fabric, and black cotton fabric. Lay the green fabric piece in front of you. Create a five to six inch in diameter half circle piece using a ruler and a fabric marking pen. Cut out the green piece. Create a second half circle from the bright pink colored fabric, this time creating a diameter of three to four inches. Cut out the bright pink circle with craft scissors.
Spray the back of the pink half circle with Krylon Spray Adhesive. Adhere immediately to the green half circle, creating the base for your “watermelon” piece. Smooth with your fingertips or a craft roller to prevent any wrinkling. Cut out several “seeds” from black fabric (small ovals) to scatter over the pink portions. Again, attach with spray adhesive.
Spray the back of the entire watermelon piece with Krylon Spray Adhesive. Adhere the embellishment immediately to the side of the painted paper lampshade. Again, smooth the fabric piece with your fingertips or a craft roller. Dry completely before installing on your favorite lamp.
TIP: Create more than one watermelon piece for the lampshade, if desired.
