I, and anyone else working from home, know how difficult it can be to focus in a chaotic house. Demanding children, spouses, television, and outdoor activity can be highly distracting from the task at hand. The more efficiently you work, the more quickly you can go have fun with your family. You need a relatively quiet work space for this of course. Even if you don’t have a room to dedicate to an office, you can convert your closet to a home office.
Choose the Closet first. It will probably end up being in your room for concentration purposes. The downside to this is you will need to clear out the closet. A portable clothes rack can be used as a replacement. The great thing about these is after you are done working, you can simply slide the rack back into the closet. The rest of the clutter can be stored in containers under your bed or in other functioning closets. You can use the highest shelves in the closet for storage if you don’t need it for office storage. Just make sure the out-of-reach items are things you won’t need anytime soon.
Vertical Space should absolutely be utilized. Additional shelving will come in handy for housing office supplies, a phone, or the little bit of décor you feel is necessary. Unless it is a walk-in closet you will be able to fit much more vertically than horizontally.
A reachable shelf with jars of paperclips, writing utensils, staples, and more will save you floor space.
A Small Desk is necessary for you to do actual work and your computer. Small tables or even school desks can be used. Avoid anything bulky with extra storage.
Even better, make a shelf your desk. Pull out the hanging rods and add shelves on the center wall. This will be space efficient and sturdy. Remember your storage is going to be kept on the walls, not on the width of your desk.
Switch the Closet Door out so it isn’t in your way. If you have a smaller closet, you may find yourself sitting slightly into the room while you’re at your closet desk. You don’t need to be distracted by a door bumping into you. Replace it with a pocket door or portable bookshelf. A bookshelf can be used as part of the room décor and office supplies.
Extra Lights will be needed. Closets don’t naturally come with adequate ambient lighting. Make sure to grab one or two desk lamps for your closet.
With a few renovations a relocations, you can have a private, easily concealable home office in your closet.
