Located on the corner of 3rd Street and Wells Avenue in Downtown Renton’s (Antique Row) sits a business creating a big stir for local residents. Common Ground Coffee and Cupcakes with its large pink sign, and colorfully painted windows proves to be an eyecatcher. Each month passerbys are greeted with a new colorful display to reflect the season, upcoming holiday, special events… Though a nearby fire caused smoke damage within the building in 2009, this business recently celebrated its third anniversary and has emerged stronger than ever offering the comforts of home for its clientele while there.
Outside the business, three wrought iron seating areas are available for those that wish to have coffee and cupcakes in the open air. One can sit in this area while enjoying the sounds of traffic, and taking in the site happenings of the locals.
Upon entering the facilty which houses seating for 34 people, a beautiful, large painting of Audrey Hepburn is visible upon the eastern wall. Seating against the southern wall allows visitors to look directly out on to 3rd street which is a one way, and capture the latest activities. A small play area, with primary colored, attached foam floor cushioning has been strategically placed in the southwest corner of the room. This area is ideal for families. Children can easily, and safely play with the rocking horses, and toys that have been made available for their usage. For those that wish to play a game of chess, a chess set can be found nearby.
The modern decor is a combination of wood tables, and comfortable, leather chairs. Small tables have been situated between the chairs, so that those enjoying this seating can keep their food and beverages at arms length. An oversized, leather footrest has been centered in the circle of leather chairs to allow for easy sharing, and comfortable foot placement for those in the area. A nearby literary area at the front of the business promotes the book exchange. Visitors are invited to participate in the book swap. If you find a book you are interested in reading, take it and put another book that you are willing to donate in its place. This has proven successful, and a nice supply of books ranging from fiction, non-fiction, autobiographies… can be found on the shelves any given day. For those interested in reading free local papers such as the Seattle Weekly or the Renton Reporter, copies are also made available in this area as well.
On the northern wall rests a plentiful supply of magazines, and additional newspapers that can be used while here.
Whether you are at the business for a quick cup of coffee, or you plan to stay around for a while and complete some work, the numerous electrical outlets, free WIFI, XM Radio, delicious aromas, and local art beautifully displayed upon the walls makes this inviting environment one difficult to decline. This is a cozy haven away from home.
The coffee served is produced by Caffe D’Arte’s legendary master roasters in South Seattle’s (Georgetown) area. Italian Sodas, Chai Tea, an assortment of Stash Tea by the bag, Bubble Tea (which is not always found at coffee shops,) and Fruit Smoothies are also available at this family owned business.
Cupcakes featuring two cake flavors (chocolate and vanilla) are baked fresh, daily in-house. Twelve types of cupcakes, and various frostings can be found on the menu. These include Lemony Snicket (white cake and mild lemon frosting,) Peppermint Patty, Tuxedo, Sweet 16 (vanilla frosting and coconut on top.) During various times of the year additional frostings are created to add variety such as (S’mores which features a chocolate and graham cracker topping.) Many days muffins (Banana, Poppy Seed) and slices of lemon pound cake are also available at the front counter.
Minature cupcakes cost $10.00 per dozen sans tax. Full size cupcakes average between $2.00-$3.00 per cupcake. Cupcakes can be pre-ordered via telephone, or fax. Wedding cupcakes can be customized for clientele, and the business is available for private party rentals.
