Comic Con 2010 still has a few days left to go. But the Comic Con 2010 opener has already gotten fans talking, as Comic Con unveiled a few big events already. There are still a lot of movies, TV shows, comic books, and other geek-friendly projects set to have a panel. However, the bar was set on yesterday, as some highly anticipated films showed new footage, surprising announcements were made, and a full on screening capped the night. If the rest of Comic Con 2010 has this kind of action, the movie blogosphere could be buzzing for a while.
The tone was set by Disney, which had a panel for Tron: Legacy for the third straight year. This time, however, the movie will actually come out in a few months, and showed a full length trailer for Comic Con 2010. Even more of the extravagant, 3D special effects were shown off, yet the most talked about special effect may have been a young Jeff Bridges.
Everyone expected a big showing from Tron: Legacy in some fashion. But Disney also upped the ante by announcing a new Haunted Mansion movie, which gained credibility with Guillermo del Toro as the director. In addition, there was a video of Johnny Depp in character as Captain Jack Sparrow, teasing the next Pirates of the Carribean movie.
The night session of Comic Con 2010 was highlighted by a special screening of a very geek-friendly movie. Scott Pilgrim vs The World is the last film this summer that movie blogs are really looking forward to. Last night, the full movie was screened for an excited audience, which makes up its target demographic.
Rave reviews are already on some blogs, which will kick off Inception-level hype on the blogosphere leading up to August 13. Comic Con 2010 was an obvious place for a Scott Pilgrim vs The World screening, but it seems to have paid off.
On the TV front, Comic Con 2010 was taken over by Showtime on Day 1. The network showed off its “anti-heroes” from Dexter, Weeds and Nurse Jackie, and showed preview footage from Dexter’s upcoming new season. Meanwhile, the CW also screened the pilot for its remake of Nikita.
In other movie news, action fans got to see new violent footage for Machete, The Expendables and Red, while Dreamworks showed off its upcoming superhero spoof Megamind. Joss Weadon and JJ Abrams joined forces for a ‘Visionaries’ panel, where Weadon confirmed he will direct The Avengers. Abrams will start shooting his new film Super 8 in September, although he already released a teaser months ago.
There are still three days left in Comic Con 2010, so yesterday’s events could be old hat by Sunday. Many more shows, movies and games have yet to show themselves off, leaving the anticipation even higher in San Diego this weekend.
