The College World Series 2010 bracket is now cut in half. Today, the College World Series 2010 bracket could send two more teams home, and set up the best-of-three finals. The final four of the tournament was settled yesterday in an extra inning rally, as TCU, Clemson, UCLA and South Carolina are all that’s left. However, TCU and South Carolina still have a lot of work to do, while UCLA and Clemson have some margin of error left. As such, the College World Series 2010 bracket could have a UCLA-Clemson final set by tonight, unless TCU and South Carolina have another rally.
Yesterday’s Game 10 determined the next opponent for Clemson, which looked to be Oklahoma. The Sooners and South Carolina Gamecocks went into the 12th inning, where Oklahoma took a 2-1 lead. In fact, the Gamecocks were one strike away from leaving the College World Series 2010 bracket.
Yet, with a 2-2 count, and with a runner on second, Jackie Bradley got a single to right, which tied the game. After a walk, Bradley Thomas got another single up the middle to end the game. Although Bradley and Thomas were a combined 0-for-10 before the inning, they combined to knock the Sooners out at the end.
With that, the College World Series 2010 bracket has a final four, after two big comebacks. TCU rallied in Game 9 with eighth inning runs and a grand slam against Florida State. But even they didn’t come back from the brink like South Carolina did last night. However, they are still very much on the brink, due to their earlier losses.
Now, the Horned Frogs and Gamecocks face another do-or-die matchup today, and hope to face another one tomorrow. Since the College World Series 2010 bracket is double elimination, unbeaten UCLA and Clemson must only win once to advance, while TCU and South Carolina need two wins.
The semifinal stage begins today, when TCU and UCLA face off at 4:30 p.m. est. The last time they met, the Bruins won 6-3, so the Horned Frogs must beat the only ranked team left today and tomorrow. Yet, TCU got into the College World Series 2010 bracket by beating Texas twice in a row, so they’ve been down this road before.
Tonight, South Carolina returns to action against arch-rival Clemson. The Tigers were among the biggest surprises in the field, but now they can reach the final with one victory against the hated Gamecocks. They had this exact same chance in 2002, but South Carolina beat them twice to reach the championship.
If TCU and South Carolina win, the College World Series 2010 bracket will have two winner-take-all games tomorrow. If either UCLA or Clemson win, there will be just one do-or-die game tomorrow night. Yet, if both UCLA and Clemson prevail, they will meet in the best-of-three championship starting Monday.
