A long-time Clinique user, I’m always eager to test out their newest products. As a long-time acne sufferer (yes, even in my adulthood), I’m also eager whenever I hear about a new acne product. The newest addition to Clinique’s award winning makeup line attracted me on both levels.
Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup promises it “Feels so fresh, looks so natural. Non-irritating, oil-free makeup helps blend away blemishes, neutralize redness. Medicated ingredients help treat existing breakouts and keep them from coming back.” That’s quite a hefty amount of promising, so I decided to rate it on each claim.
Considering the amount of blemish-coverage this makeup supplies, it’s surprising how lightweight the liquid truly is. Fresh and natural is a good description of the texture, possibly because of the oil-free formula. Other product reviewers, myself among them, were surprised at how well the makeup covers blemishes. For light to moderate blemishes, no additional concealer was needed to hide the spots.
The ‘medicated ingredients’ (salicylic acid, which soothes redness and kills the bacteria in a pimple) is a unique feature, one I would have expected to make the liquid inconsistent or tacky. You do need to shake the bottle before each application (to avoid separation), but that’s an easy extra step to get the even coverage this supplies. The liquid goes on smoothly and blends evenly, even with your fingertips.
So far, so good. As for the last claim that it will ‘treat existing breakouts and keep them from coming back’? Also true. The salicylic acid treats the breakouts and keeps the p. acne bacteria from spreading to other pores. The oil-free formula is nonacnegenic (meaning that it doesn’t settle in and clog pores) so it won’t cause future breakout issues. Of course, this makeup still needs to be washed off at night (sleeping in makeup is bad news) but wearing it throughout the day won’t hurt the skin.
As for all-day wear, that’s the one issue I had with this formula. Acne-prone skin is often (but not always) more oily than “normal” skin. That makes it difficult to keep any makeup on all day, especially one that’s so lightweight. I had some success with a simple pressed powder to set the makeup and I’d recommend considering picking up a coordinating shade and formula from Clinique. My favorite is the Stay Pressed Sheer Pressed powder (also oil-free) because it’s light enough to use after this great formula.
If you’re acne-prone and in need of a new foundation formula to get you through the summer, I recommend giving this one a try. It’s available in Clinique stores and online in eight shades.
