Why clean the house or let your housekeeper clean the house using commercial chemical cleaners (which are not only expensive but unhealthy and potentially hazardous to health and environment) when you can make your own cleaners from cheap and non-hazardous ingredients? If you’ve smelled the spray from commercial cleaning products, you know it can’t be good for you because it burns your nose and just smells terrible. The chemical ingredients have been shown to cause “respiratory irritation and other human health issues,” according to Consumer Reports Greener Choices website. Growing children are especially susceptible to the harmful affects of chemical cleaners. These chemicals also contribute to air and water pollution and can harm animal and plant life.
So cleaning with non-toxic cleaners is as important to you and your family as it is to helping the environment stay pristine. Here are a few easy recipes for homemade cleaners.
What you need:
Castile soap (Dr Bronner’s is good)
A spray bottle
Mix equal parts white vinegar and distilled water in an old spray bottle: 2 cups each is good
Use to clean counters, sinks, toilets, etc.
Tip: Be sure to dry the surface after spraying since it is more watery than a commercial spray and can leave water spots.
Bathtub, sink and toilet scrub:
Thoroughly spray the surface to be cleaned with all-purpose spray
Liberally sprinkle baking soda over surface
Squirt castile soap conservatively in spots
Use a wetted sponge scrubber to scrub the surface down and rinse. For toilets just sprinkle this all in the bowl and scrub with toilet brush.
Tip: If the baking soda and soap collect on the bottom of the bathtub, start there first and work your way up scooping up the cleaner to use on the tiles.
For greasy surfaces like stove tops or oven:
Sprinkle some baking soda on surface and spray with all-purpose cleaner
Let sit for 30 minutes or so. Scrub and wipe clean.
Tip: The baking soda and water/vinegar combination create a foam that is very good at getting rid of grease.
