It can be very frustrating to pay the ridiculous prices of comic books today and to flip through the pages and find that, in addition to the increasing prices and shrinking length of comic books, there are also a ton of pages taken up by ads. On the bright side comic book ads now have ads for cool things like video games and movies and we no longer have to put up with those dumb Hostess ads.
For the younger generation that never had Hostess ads let me explain. Back in my younger days almost every comic book, both Marvel and DC, would have Hostess ads. The ad would be a couple of panels of a comic but in this ad the superhero would be more interested in eating some kind of hostess dessert than saving the day. They were all lame and a lot of them were pretty stupid. Fortunately a website called Tomorrow’s Heroes collects the Hostess ads so you can see for yourself how bad they are.
In the Hostess ad called Aquaman in Pirate’s Gold there are scuba divers searching for pirate’s gold. Aquaman gives them Twinkies an the scuba divers then decide that the Twinkies are “real gold” and they must get back to land to buy some more. I’m assuming since they called this cake snack by its name, Twinkies, that they already knew the Twinkies exist and that they are better than real gold. So why not just skip the scuba diving altogether and go to the store to buy Twinkies?
In a Hostess ad starring Batgirl a couple a trio of thieves plan to steal the valuables of everybody in a theater. The thieves are distracted by Hostess Fruit Pies and begin to eat them instead of burglarizing the theater. Batgirl then swoops in and captures them…but the never committed their crime. Are you allowed to arrest people for eating Hostess products? That would dissuade people from eating Hostess snacks.
Even Bugs Bunny was subjected to Hostess Ads. In one Bugs Bunny Hostess ad we see Elmer Fudd and his nephew hunting Bugs Bunny. When they finally meet Bugs Bunny offers Elmer Fudd some Twinkies. What? Bugs Bunny just offers something to Elmer Fudd without a trick? Elmer Fudd doesn’t try and destroy Bugs Bunny? Elmer Fudd has a nephew? Who made up this crap?
Daredevil makes an appearance in a Hostess ad and spoils the plan of Johnny Punk by offering them Hostess fruit snacks so they will stop their nefarious plan. The key to this ad though is that the villain’s name is Johnny Punk. Who was his mother? She doomed him to being a villain with that kind of name. She might as well called her son Thieven McStealerton.
Green Lantern nearly gets eaten by a famished Triclops in his Hostess Ad. What a coincidence that the villain is always hungry. If only there were some villains with full stomachs. Then the heroes would get to keep their yummy Hostess snacks. Many more comic book characters got into the Hostess ads act including Spider-man, Wonder Woman, Flash, Batman, Archie and Casper the Friendly Ghost.
