The Phoenix office of Grant Thornton LLP has partnered with the City of Tempe to proclaim May 3 to May 9 “Spring for Strength Week” in the Valley to help encourage businesses in the area to raise awareness, funds and walkers for the Breast Cancer Network of Strength’s Walk to Empower on Mothers’ Day at Tempe Beach Park.
Mayor Hugh Hallman and his wife also announced they would be running in the race as part of Grant Thornton’s GT C.A.R.E.S. team.
Further, Grant Thornton’s own Maia Legge, who is an associate in the National Tax Strategic Solutions department, was named a BeeWell for Life™ ambassador for the local walk, where she will be responsible for using social media to capture special moments during the day’s events. Bumble Bee® Foods created the BeeWell for Life program to encourage communities nationwide to walk one million miles. Between now and October 31, 2010, Bumble Bee will donate 15 cents to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength for every mile logged on www.beewellforlife.com.
“Our firm, as a whole, is committed to coming together to support this important cause,” said Phoenix Office Managing Partner Brad Preber. “It is especially critical during tough economic times that organizations like Network of Strength continue to receive the funding they need to support their important missions in our local communities and across the country. Grant Thornton’s Phoenix office is proud to do all it can to support Network of Strength and make a difference for all those touched by breast cancer.”
Over the past several months, the Phoenix office held a March Madness fundraiser, used book sales, bake sales, an auction, wine tastings and even published a cookbook of employee recipes to raise funds for the cause. The cookbooks are currently available for $25 and can be purchased by calling (602) 474-3473. Proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Network of Strength.
Breast Cancer Network of Strength provides immediate emotional relief to anyone affected by breast cancer through the YourShoes™ 24/7 breast cancer support center, which includes the country’s only toll-free breast cancer hotline staffed exclusively by breast cancer survivors. In 2009, Grant Thornton contributed $195,000 through sponsorship and fundraising by partners and employees; nearly 500 people from the firm participated in Network of Strength’s Mother’s Day Walk to Empower in 12 cities across the country.
