Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil, in conjunction with the Estate of Michael Jackson, is developing a live musical entertainment extravaganza for 2011. The Cirque du Soleil program will feature the music of the late Michael Jackson, the self-titled King of Pop.
Michael Jackson’s own family has expressed appreciation for the entertainment tribute. “Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son in such an important way,” said Katherine Jackson, Michael Jackson’s mother.
Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson Show to Open in the Fall of 2011.
Beginning in the fall of 2011, Cirque du Soleil will offer an arena-touring Michael Jackson show, followed by a permanent show in Las Vegas in 2010. Las Vegas developers are anticipating the opening of an accompanying themed nightclub as well.
John Branca and John McClain, two executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson, are working with Cirque du Soleil staff to create the entertainment program, which will be based on the songs of the late pop legend. (Michael Jackson died in June 2009.) Going forward, Cirque du Soleil and the Estate of Michael Jackson will share half ownership of the project (as well as the profits from the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson show.)
The Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson show, untitled at this point, is rumored to include 3D technology, acrobatics, holograms and even moving theater seats. The permanent Las Vegas show will undoubtedly feature even more advanced and elaborate special effects – hologrammatically placing Michael Jackson himself in the performance, along with the Cirque du Soleil dancers.
“This will not just be a tribute to Michael’s musical genius,” explained John Branca, “but a live entertainment experience that uses the most advanced technology to push every creative boundary as Michael always did. Having attended Cirque du Soleil performances with Michael, I know he was a huge fan. We are excited to be partners with Cirque du Soleil to give Michael’s fans a truly unique way to hear, see and feel Michael’s music.”
John McClain agreed. “There will never be a multi-faceted entrepreneur, humanitarian and innovator like Michael and it is only befitting that this partnership be with Cirque du Soleil,” John McClain commented. “No artist electrified the stage more than Michael did. We expect that his fans will come away from these Cirque du Soleil performances feeling the exhilaration of a Michael Jackson experience and with an even greater appreciation of his legacy.”
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberti sang the praises of Michael Jackson, as he described the planned show. “Michael Jackson is the King of Pop and an all-time phenomenal artist, both timeless and contemporary,” Guy Laliberti said. “As a creative challenge, this project is the ultimate. Through the use of cutting edge technology, we will produce a Cirque du Soleil experience not only worthy of Michael but unlike any other we have created before. We are also so pleased that our longtime partner MGM Mirage has once again joined us in presenting another unique creative experience in Las Vegas.”
The Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson show is expected to debut in Las Vegas, hosted in part by the MGM Mirage Hotel, a Cirque du Soleil partner. The exact venue for the program is yet to be announced, although it is likely to be one of the MGM Mirage’s ten Las Vegas properties.
