This morning, I was very touched by a video I watched about AIDS orphans and other children at the Circle of Peace school in Uganda. You can watch the video here. In the video, these beautiful, smiling but impoverished kids tell us what they would buy if they had $50.00. Most mentioned shoes or clothing. I was brought to tears when one sweet little boy said he would buy a cup to drink out of and a bowl. Imagine the same question asked of an American teenager. What would their response be?
There were, of course, several kids on the video, who said they would buy a phone. The difference is that the phone was for calling their brothers and sisters, who do not live with them. You see, when their parents die of AIDS, the kids often get split up. Some families also can only afford to send one child to school. This is such a heart wrenching situation. I’m far from rich, but I’m a multimillionaire compared to these kids. My immediate thought was, what can I do to help?
Here’s the good news. These kids on the video and other children as well, have all drawn pictures of what they would buy for $50.00. You and I can buy these pictures for $50.00 each. Where does the money go? It pays for a year of school tuition for one Ugandan child. For just $50.00, the cost of one dinner date, you can send a Ugandan child to school for an entire year. Plus, you will have a beautiful and unique piece of art with a story behind it, to hang on your wall.
Many times, as Americans, we will say that we are broke. For some of us, this is very true. But when was the last time you went without a pair of shoes, a cup to drink from, a bowl to eat from or food to put in it? My guess is, never. Please, everyone, let’s help these kids out. Go to the Givology website here. You can buy a drawing or help in other ways. Give up your dinner date out this week so a child can attend school for a year. Do it for the children. They need you.
We see these pleas for help often, as Americans and we think to ourselves, well, I can’t help everyone! This is very true. But you can help someone. You can help one Ugandan child get a years education. While you are at it, see what else you can do for them. Seriously, folks, think of the money you wasted this week on movies, take out food or whatever else you may have purchased that was not a true necessity.
If a year of school is just $50.00, imagine how many pairs of shoes, or meals, or bottles of clean water you could buy for that child. Imagine the change you can make in one child’s life. Imagine what a difference it would make to that child, to have a chance at survival and a normal life. Don’t order that pizza. Put the phone down and put your money where it will do some real good. Buy a child’s drawing and send them to school for a year. It could change their life.
