Nobody knows what happened between Chris Brown and his former girlfriend, Rihanna, on the night of the fight that left the beautiful Barbadian singer’s face battered and bruised, as well as the career of the once enormously popular Chris Brown.
On the way to an awards show, they got into an altercation that apparently resulted in a brawl. Afterwards, the couple split, Chris Brown complied with the courts and they went on their separate paths. (And no, I won’t make jokes about how Rihanna should have hit him with her umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh-eh).
Nobody seems to look at Chris Brown the same way. Was it self-defense or a bad temper? Regardless, hitting a woman or anybody else is wrong. If Rihinna provoked the altercation by striking him and taking his car keys (as reported), he still did not have to go to the extreme.
Since the incident, Chris Brown has discussed the issue publicly, expressed great remorse and made amends legally.
Brown’s career and popularity plummeted so bad that he issued a public announcement to the entertainment industry and his fans asking them to support him. Still, he lost legions of fans and many endorsement deals, resulting in several million dollars of lost revenue.
On the BET Awards on Sunday, June 27, 2010, Chris Brown once again proved one thing; the man can dance and is enormously talented. His dances moved emulated the King of Pop so well that it was almost eerie. Chris Brown has mentioned before that Michael Jackson has always been one of his greatest inspirations and that surely that is reflected in his fluid dance moves.
Chris Brown owned the stage and personified the late Michael Jackson flawlessly during the dance sequence, which paid tribute to several Michael Jackson mega-hits, but when he attempted to sing the song, Man in the Mirror”, he literally fell apart onstage. Crying hysterically, he couldn’t even sing the song and just gave up. Was he crying over the untimely loss of Michael Jackson or did the lyric of the songs hit home.
“I’m starting with the man in the mirror. I’m asking him to change his ways.” Those lyrics are universal and can apply to all of us, which is why that song, in particular, has such an impact. Did it send a special message to Chris Brown or was the entire teary-eyed breakdown staged as some people seem to think? This talented young man can sing and dance and he can also act, but to me his tears and emotions looked genuine. If he was faking it, then he deserves an Academy award nod.
I hope that he’s taken a look at himself in the mirror and learned from his mistake and I hope that Rihanna has as well. Everybody makes mistakes in life, some much worse than others, but Chris Brown’s talent is truly remarkable as is his obvious admiration for the King of Pop and his ability to channel his talent.
