If you are looking for an adorable yet inexpensive way to dress up a plain rocking chair in your child’s bedroom or nursery, look no further than this rubber ducky themed rocking chair. This project is also perfect for unisex nursery spaces.
For this project, you will need:
– Unfinished wooden rocking chair (available at craft supply shops)
– Medium grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White
– Rubber duck print scrapbook paper
– Craft knife
– Self-healing mat
– Pencil
– Ruler
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Sponge brush
– Popsicle stick
– Polyurethane sealant
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Due to the messy nature of this project, it is best to first cover your work area with a few sheets of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth prior to starting this project. Use a sheet of medium grit sandpaper to smooth the surface of the unfinished wooden rocking chair. With a tack cloth or other soft cloth, wipe down the surface of the wood to remove any dust and/or debris.
Spray the entire rocking chair with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. (This may require more than one can of primer to complete.) Once the primed wood surface is dry, paint the rocking chair using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White. Wait forty five minutes to one hour before applying a second coat of paint. Repeat this process if a third and/or fourth coat of white paint is necessary. Let the rocking chair project dry overnight before continuing.
Lay the sheet of rubber ducky themed scrapbook paper flat on the self healing mat. With a ruler and a pencil, create a strip of paper that is one inch wide by the length of the top front of the back of the rocking chair. (This will vary depending on the size and style of the rocking chair itself.) Carefully cut out the piece with a craft knife.
Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of the paper strip with a sponge brush. Adhere to the painted rocking chair. Smooth the rubber ducky themed paper with a popsicle stick to prevent any wrinkling. Dry overnight. Apply several coats of polyurethane sealant to the project (especially over the paper piece). Cure for several days before using the rocking chair.
