Children’s stools are a great helper around the house, whether in a playroom to sit or a bathroom to enable smaller children to wash their hands, brush their teeth, etc. This adorable football themed children’s stool can be customized with your favorite team or your child’s name very easily.
For this project, you will need (per stool):
– Unfinished wooden step stool (available at craft supply shops)
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Emerald Green
– Football themed scrapbook paper
– Pencil
– Ruler
– Craft knife
– Self-healing mat
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Polyurethane sealant
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Before starting, cover your work area with several sheets of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth to protect it during the painting and gluing processes of this project. Use one or two sheets of medium or fine grit sandpaper to smooth the outside of the unfinished wooden stool. Wipe down the surface of the wood with a tack cloth or other soft cloth to remove any dust and/or grit.
Spray the entire outside of the step stool with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the stool dry for about an hour, but no more than three hours. Paint the stool with four to five coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Emerald Green. (Wait a half an hour between coats of green paint.) Allow the stool to dry overnight.
Place the football themed scrapbook paper flat on a self-healing mat. (This can be a generic football theme or specific to a certain team.) Decide what items you wish to incorporate on your step stool. Use a ruler and a pencil to mark off cut lines for these designs, and carefully cut out the shapes with a craft knife. If you want to add your child’s name to the project, cut out lettering from a couple pieces of white cardstock.
Apply a large amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of each of the paper pieces. Adhere the pieces onto the green step stool, as desired. Smooth the paper with your fingers to prevent any wrinkling. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp soft cloth. Dry overnight.
Seal the step stool with several coats of polyurethane sealant. Let the stool cure for several days before using.
