The Pittsburgh Zoo offers quite a few activities that are geared at children or that children may enjoy while visiting the animals. December through March, your child aged 2 – 13 can get into the zoo for $8, while it will cost $11 during the summer months, so you’ll want to get your money’s worth.
The Pittsburgh Zoo has an entire section dedicated to children called the Kid’s Kingdom, which features animals native to Pennsylvania as well as animals from outside of the country (Kangaroos!). You can purchase Zoo Keys that children can stick into little boxes in the Kid’s Kingdom that will give them a child-friendly description of the animal that they’re looking at. Zoo Keys are great for young children who are interested in learning about each of the animals in the Kid’s Kingdom.
In the Kid’s Kingdom, you can get up close and personal with a few animals you may never want to see in the wild including a skunk (with it’s sprayer taken out!), a scorpion, or a rattlesnake. You’ll also be able to see (and pet!, if they will come close enough) kangaroo and deer. The Kid’s Kingdom also incorporates cool activities a child would love, from a swinging bridge to other learning activities.
Even for adults, it can be cool to see an animal be fed and hear about what it is eating. The schedule of animal feedings is available at the zoo, and children will delight in seeing their favorite animal being fed.
Sea Lion Shows
In the Kid’s Kingdom, you can see a Sea Lion Show everyday at 12:30 pm. The trainers will demonstrate some of the tricks the sea lions have been learning, tell you a little bit about each of the animals, and you will also be able to watch them be fed.
If you child needs a break from the heat, a tree slide (fake tree, of course.) is located in the reptile house for a little bit of indoor playground fun!
Pet Sting Rays
In the aquarium, you are able to pet stingrays with a zoo employee present, and children can climb through a tunnel underneath of the stingray tank to see the amazing animals from all angles!
Wildlife Academy Classes
If your child is interested in learning more about their favorite animals in the zoo, the Pittsburgh Zoo offers Wildlife Academy classes for children aged 2 – 13. More information about these classes is available here on the Pittsburgh Zoo’s website.
Summer Zoo Camp
In addition to the Wildlife Academy classes, children can also attend summer camp at the Pittsburgh Zoo to become even more acquainted with their favorite animals. Full as well as half-day zoo camps are available. At zoo camp, the children do crafts, participate in animal-related activities, and take behind-the-scenes tours based on their age group. More information is available here on their website as well.
