Looking for a cheap and easy Halloween haunted house prop? Everyone else has witches, ghosts and goblins at their haunted houses. You’ve never been one to follow the crowd. Why not try a different prop this year? Try making your own alien in a jar. It may sound complicated, but it’s a really easy Halloween haunted house prop. You’ll have all your friends wondering if you stole this prop from area 51. Here’s how to make a cheap alien in a jar the easy way.
Supplies
To make your own alien in a jar, a few inexpensive supplies will be needed. You will need a rubber alien mask. These are the cheap dollar variety ones you see in big box stores at Halloween time. Get a pair of fake rubber glow in the dark eyes while you are there. You will also need some fiber-fill stuffing. Purchase a dollar store rubber baby doll with removable head as well. As for the jar, an old gallon size pickle jar will do. You will also need some strong glue, food coloring, an old pair of panty hose and a skein of cheap, flesh colored yarn to match the baby doll. A tablespoon of chlorine bleach completes the list.
Alien Head
Cut the panty hose legs off about six inches below the panty part of the hose. Tie a knot at the bottom of each six inch portion of leg. Stuff the panty hose ¾ full with the fiber-fill stuffing. Add a pile of yarn pieces to each side at the top. This will give the appearance of a brain, once finished. Gather the top of the panty hose together, twist, and tie once tightly. Now bring each of the lengths in your hand down between the legs of the panty hose and double knot them together. Once you do this, there should be two distinct sides of the alien brain. This is the base for the alien head. It should be the right size for the rubber mask.
Finishing the Alien Head
Now it’s time to finish the head portion of this Halloween haunted house prop. Remove the elastic from the rubber alien mask. It will need to be attached to the alien head. Glue the rubber glow in the dark eyes onto the mask. Then, brush some glue all over the inside of the rubber mask. Attach the mask to the stocking head, leaving the leg portion of the stuffed panty hose hanging down. Be sure the split in the center of the brain is positioned in proportion to the mask. You should now have an alien head, with a split down the middle of the brain, mask at the front of the face and two stuffed stocking legs hanging down.
Attaching the Head and Finishing the Alien
You’re almost done with your cheap and easy Halloween haunted house prop. The next step is to remove the head and clothing from the dollar store baby doll. Now push the two stuffed panty hose legs dangling from the alien head into the opening. If you have stuffed them full enough, they should hold the head on the doll. To make a creepy umbilical cord for your alien in a jar, cut ten – two foot pieces of yarn and knot them together at one end. Glue the knot to the alien’s bellybutton. Let your alien dry overnight before finishing this Halloween haunted house prop.
Placing the Alien in the Jar
This might take several attempts. First you must find the ideal positioning. Hold the alien in the jar until it looks right and is positioned so it can be glued to the jar. Remember, it must appear to be floating in the jar, once it’s filled with water. Glue the alien to the jar in your chosen position. Let the glue dry before proceeding. Use a pitcher to mix water with yellow and green food coloring. The result should be a sickly yellow green color. Pour the colored water into your alien filled jar. Add a tablespoon of chlorine bleach to the water, to discourage bacterial and fungal growth. Place the cover on the jar. Now your creepy alien in a jar is finished. On to the next Halloween haunted house prop!
