Jimmy Dean – Dead at Age 81
Although he didn’t live in Tennessee, you can buy his sausage at most any store in the state. Dean died Sunday at his home near Richmond, Virginia. “Big Bad John” is the song he will be most remembered for. His wife, Donna Meade Dean, said he had some health problems but he seemed to be doing ok.
He was eating dinner while watching TV on Sunday. She left the room and returned to find him non-responsive and he was declared dead at 7:45 PM. The ‘sausage king’ sold his business to the Sara Lee Corporation in 1984. He spent his final years on their 200 acre estate outside of Richmond, VA.
RIP: Big Bad John….
The memory of Cherokee Chief John Ross is being kept alive on the farmland he once owned. That was before the Cherokee were moved out of the southeast in the 1930’s and forced to Oklahoma.
Currently Bradley County, Tennessee is trying to capture funds to fix up a log home from the 1820’s. This log home is on farmland that was once owned by Chief John Ross. The logs are rotting in places and it needs at least $5,000 worth of work to save the building. Help has been offered by the Ocoee Region Builders Association, who will help take care of the problems before more severe damage occurs.
This old cabin was built by a cousin of Andrew Johnson and moved to its current site. Where it stands now the logs were arranged to resemble the cabin John Ross lived in, which was in the area known as The Trail of Tears. This is a piece of history that needs to be saved.
