Abby Sunderland the California 16 year old who set out to sail around the world alone has been rescued from the storm, but the storm is just starting for the family. The big question is what were these parents thinking?
Sunderland is a very mature 16 year old by all accounts, but mature or not, this is something most parents would not let a 16 year old do. The parents appear to stand their ground saying that they would rather have Abigail do this then sit around and watch TV all day. There has to be something in the middle between a death defying around the world sail and watching TV.
Will the parents of Abby Sunderland be charged with endangerment of a child? Will any charges at all be brought against the parents who allowed their 16 year old to do such a dangerous trip alone? At 16 you have restrictions on your drivers license in most states. The law allows you to only drive during daylight hours and the law does not allow friends in the car in a few different states. The law watches out for kids at this age. Where will the law stand in this case?
Abigail Sunderland’s Parents News Conference Defending Their Decisions Here.
The Indian Ocean is notoriously dangerous this time of year with storms during what is the winter months on that side of the world. The parents were completely aware of the dangers and still allowed her to go according to CNN.
One celebrity that has not been not shy about putting his two cents was Geraldo Rivera. Geraldo was very vocal on the bad decisions made by the parents of Abigail Sunderland. He appeared on Fox News and appeared almost outraged that the parents would allow their 16 year old to do this on her own. Geraldo coins himself an expert sailor who has sailed around the world so he said he has been in the Indian Ocean during this time of year. He thinks it is no place for a group of skilled sailors during the stormy winter season, never mind a 16 year old kid.
You do not have to be Geraldo Rivera to be shocked at parents who let a 16 year old to sail around the world by herself. It is just wrong. Parents need to protect their kids. Many teenagers who are as mature as Abby Sunderland is said to be want to do death defying stunts only to have the voice of reason from their parents stopping them.
Abby got knocked around in 30 foot waves and the mast on her boat snapped in half. The closest boat was two days away. If she had been in the water, she more than likely not have made the two day wait alive. So much danger was around every corner with this trip. Abby’s 17 year old brother made the same trip successfully last year. There was not as big as a media hoopla because he made it. The parents let both their teenagers do a solo trip around the world.
The Sunderlands tell the media they let the kids go and it was done for nothing more than the kids wanting to take on this feat. If they have gained monetarily from this venture, they should be ashamed of themselves. The legal age of 18 is right around the corner and there is a reason kids are not allowed to make decisions like this on their own until they hit 18. They are not mature enough to weigh the possible dangers. The parents should not have allowed this to happen.
It was a stroke of luck a ship was near enough to get to Abby in two days, she may have had to wait much longer in the vast Indian Ocean. The reason ships are scarce is because it is winter and the seas are dangerous. Sunderland set sail in a tea cup in comparison to what most seasoned sailors would use to sail those seas.
The Sunderlands got a gift. Their daughter was saved from the cold stormy Indian Ocean and will soon be back on dry ground. Hopefully the ordeal will make them think twice before allowing Abigail Sunderland another try at a solo attempt at around the world sailing. Hopefully the authorities of the Child Protective Services will weigh in also to make sure it does not happen again.
