Fantasy football is quickly becoming more popular for CFL fans, and the high scoring game typically leads to high points for fantasy football owners. The CFL has long been recognized as the oldest professional football league in North America. However, it’s sometimes played second fiddle to the NFL. Regardless, for diehard football fans, not only is the CFL more exiting, but so to is its’ fantasy football. Fielding a competitive fantasy football team starts with a solid quarterback and these are the best CFL quarterbacks for fantasy football owners.
Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes
Anthony Calvillo is easily this decade’s greatest CFL quarterback. The 16 year veteran led Montreal to its second Grey Cup in 10 years by beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders with a last second field goal. Calvillo is a three time winner of the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award, a four time all-star, and is consistently among the top 2 quarterbacks every year. Calvillo’s 2009 season was solid, if unspectacular, as he passed for 4,639 yards and 26 touchdowns. Montreal has a high powered offense with receivers Kerry Watkins, Ben Cahoon and Jamel Richardson, and Calvillo should easily become the number one quarterback for CFL fantasy football owners.
Ricky Ray of the Edmonton Eskimos
If ever a quarterback matched Calvillo’s abilities and leadership, it’s Ricky Ray of the Edmonton Eskimos. Ray is a 2 time Grey Cup Champion and a consistent CFL quarterback whose height of 6 feet 3 inches, allows him to see far downfield and stay in the pocket until the last second. Largely considered a pocket passer, which is rare in the CFL, Ray has a phenomenal ability to withstand pressure and go through his progressions. Ray’s 2009 season saw him throw for 4,916 yards, with 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. If fantasy football owners can’t grab Calvillo, then Ray is the next best available quarterback.
Henry Burris of the Calgary Stampeders
As the CFL only has 8 teams, this list can’t realistically have a top 5. That wouldn’t make any sense at all. Therefore, rounding out our list of top 3 quarterbacks is Henry Burris of the Calgary Stampeders. Burris won the 2008 Grey Cup in Montreal and was a solid performer in the CFL playoffs. His 2009 season wasn’t great, but he should improve with both Nik Lewis and Jeremaine Copeland as his receivers. In 2009, Burris threw for 4,831 yards, 22 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Burris is easily a top 3 CFL fantasy football quarterback.
Darian Durant of the Saskatchewan Roughriders
Kevin Glenn of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Bucky Pierce of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
