Sean Penn and Robin Wright officially signed the divorce papers after fourteen years of marriage. This was the third time the couple separated, but now it is final. The couple will share custody of their son Hopper. Sean Penn told Vanity Fair in an interview this summer that his ex-wife Robin Wright, “is a ghost to me now. We spent all those years together…. Now she’s just gone.”
Penn and Wright have gone through some very stressful events in the past few years of their marriage. First, their son Hopper had a serious head injury after a skateboarding accident. After a high-risk surgery, Hopper survived and endured a long but successful recovery. Penn later traveled to Haiti after the devastating earthquake, where he was presented a certificate of honor from Lieutenant General P. K.Keen. Penn lived in a tent for months to help displaced earthquake survivors in Haiti’s capital city. In the Vanity Fair interview, he also revealed, “I was for 20 years in a relationship with Robin and 18 years with children. I didn’t have time to commit to anything–for real–in places like Iraq, except to denounce the war. But now I’m single. I can lend a hand.”
Penn and Wright are not the only celebrity couples to separate this summer. After ten plastic surgeries in ten hours, Heidi Montag’s new look didn’t change the fact that she wanted a divorce from Spencer Pratt. Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, the infamous couple on MTV’s The Hills, officially filed for divorce this month as well. Montag and Pratt seem to have had a quiet break up, citing irreconcilable differences. In an interview with People Magazine, Pratt announced, “We love each other but I’m a fame whore and I’ll never grow out of it. She knows that and doesn’t want that.”
Divorce is difficult for any couple, but celebrity couples experience even more stress when their relationships are in the public eye. It seems that Penn has successfully moved on, and devoted himself to a worthy cause. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt after their divorce. Will Heidi have more time to devote to fashion design or her favorite charities? Let’s hope both couples can turn a stressful divorce into a good thing, like Penn and his work in Haiti.
