Many celebrities say they support a more earth friendly green way of life and then they only give it lip service. There are some celebrities who just talk about environmental issues trying to take advantage of what they consider the cool thing right now. But there are many celebrities who genuinely care for the issues we face environmentally. Some are George Clooney, Daryl Hannah, Matt Damon, Adam Grenier, Bono, Orlando Bloom, Sting and Jake Gyllenhaal. Here are three actors who not only talk of being green they live it daily. Just as importantly they do all the can with their money to support causes and make change that we need to ensure the health of the earth.
Mostly know for his role as Jack in the blockbuster movie “Titanic” he does much more than make millions of women around the world swoon. In 1998 he founded “The Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation”, his foundation works side by side with other organizations to increase awareness of important green issues. Known for being a headstrong, outspoken advocate for all things environmental he puts his money to good use. Recently he donated $1 million dollars for disaster relief in Haiti, he also supports multiple eco-friendly charities. Some are: Tree People, Global Green, Stop Global Warming, Global Cool and The Reef Check Foundation which he is the honorary chairman.
He also has produced documentaries called “The Eleventh Hour” and Planet Green’s “Greensburg”. He is a celebrity who also practices what he preaches, he is often seen driving around Hollywood in his Toyota Prius Hybrid. He also refuses to fly on private planes opting for commercial airlines. It has even been reported he has a environmentally friendly toilet at his home that cost him $3,200.
Somehow between his busy movie career and his many children with wife Angelina Jolie he finds time to be one of the most active celebrities in supporting all things green. As far back as 1994 he has been speaking out for energy independence and urging others to purchase energy efficient hybrid cars. He has partnered with Green Global USA in starting a sustainable design competition, and building greener more cost effective schools in New Orleans. He has invested many hours and millions of dollars working to make New Orleans a greener city.
He hosted a PBS special in 2006 called “Design:e2”,which focused on design technology and other environmentally conscious issues. His plight to help save the Earth little by little went global when he helped design a green hotel in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. He and his wife Angeline Jolie also bought a chateau in the south of France which has one of the oldest vineyards in the world, and is now eco-friendly.
Ed Begley, Jr.
Considered by many as one of the most active celebrity involved in saving the environment, he truly lives it daily. You might have seen the show he had on HGTV “Living with Ed”, showcasing his daily crusade to be more eco-friendly. He has developed his own line of green cleaning product’s named “Begley’s Best”. He once made headlines when he arrived at the Academy Awards on his bike instead of the customary limo. This is not only a one time thing, he is seen riding his bike all over Los Angeles. He has been featured in the “New York Times” with a article trying to spread information and awareness on green living.
Anyone who has seen his show knows how truly dedicated he is to this cause. Unlike many celebrities he lives in a small modest home. His house is powered by solar panels, wind power and he uses a solar oven. He grows his own food as much as possible, collects rainwater for watering his lawn and garden. On his show I even saw him riding a stationary bike one time to power the toaster to make toast. He and these other celebrities are truly inspiring to everyone. They are constantly showing us how much of a difference we all can make if we choose to be more green.
