The Cleveland Cavaliers’ Delonte West’s name has been mentioned in trade rumors today. In the near future, NBA fans might look back at this fact and realize it was the surest sign yet that LeBron James is seriously considering returning to Cleveland.
Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that James is a free agent with six franchises hot on his trail. The NBA’s Knicks, Nets, Bulls, Clippers, Heat and the incumbent Cavaliers have been tripping all over themselves to try to get James to sign with them. Each of these teams, with the exception of the Clippers, have been rumored at one point or another to be the favorite to sign James.
Despite signing up for Twitter earlier today, James has been completely silent on the subject and on most of his personal life. He has met with front office executives from all of the aforementioned teams but has not tipped his hand; a decision is reportedly due on Wednesday. But even that is subject to change.
But for those who are into reading tea leaves, and anybody closely following this story must be, there have been a couple of signs as to which way James might be leaning.
While there may be other justifiable reasons to want to try and trade Delonte West, one of the most compelling might be the fact that in many quarters West is believed to have had a sexual affair with James’ mother, Gloria James, last year.
What started out as an Internet rumor quickly spread; even former NBA great Calvin Murphy chimed in. Asked about it, Murphy said in a radio interview, “”It ain’t no rumor … it’s absolutely true. My sources – and they’re legit sources – say the only people that didn’t know were LeBron and me.”
Murphy went on to predict that Delonte West’s future in the NBA would be uncertain. He said, “Delonte West is going to get what they call the old proverbial blackball. They was (sic) doing the horizontal poker. It is absolutely horrifying for someone to be a scuzz bucket and do something like that. I’m talking about both of them.”
While a trade involving Delonte West could be purely coincidental, the entire storyline has followed a fairly predictable pattern. James was said to find out about the affair shortly before Game 4, and many assume his poor and disinterested play in that game was the result of his being shocked by the revelation.
And now, as James considers his options, the Cavaliers suddenly are reportedly interested in trading Delonte West. The proposed trading of West could prove to be a clear sign that the Cavaliers are planning for LeBron James’ return.
