Dieting can be a very frustrating effort. When you first start the diet, you are excited when you lose a few pounds of weight. As time goes on, even though you are strictly sticking to the same diet, you realize that you are gaining weight instead of losing it. Knowing what causes this problem can help you turn your weight gain into weight loss again.
Causes of weight gain instead of weight loss when dieting:
Lifting Weights- If you have been weight lifting/training since you started dieting, you will eventually gain weight rather than losing it. Muscle weighs more than fat and this is one occasion that you will be happy with the weight gain. Muscle gives you a much more defined look. Your clothing will fit better and your body will feel much better. You could also be building muscle from other types of exercise as well. It just might take longer for the muscle weight gain to show on the scale because it takes longer to build muscle if you aren’t weight training.
Cheating- Cheating on your diet, even a little, can cause you to gain more weight than you thought possible. When your body has gotten used to a certain diet and you introduce something new to it, the body reacts by adding more than the normal weight. There is always a chance that you will cheat a bit on your diet. There are ways to avoid gaining weight even when you cheat on your diet. It is okay to cheat every now and then, but remember that you shouldn’t over indulge in these pleasures. They can destroy the entire goal that you have been striving to reach.
Metabolism- Your metabolism rate has a great deal to do with whether you gain or lose weight while you are trying to lose it. If you have stopped working out, for instance, this could cause your metabolism to take a nose dive. If your workout included weight lifting, your metabolism will remain high for a good period of time but will eventually drop thus causing you to gain weight. In order to continue losing weight, begin your workouts again. Once you begin to work out again, you will see a change in weight loss again.
Water Retention- Water retention can cause you to gain weight whether you have been sticking closely to your diet and exercise program. There are different things that can cause you to retain water or bloat. Some of the things that can cause this is salt consumption, menstrual cycle and caffeine consumption. Avoiding these things will help avoid you from retaining water and bloating. This weight gain is only temporary unless you continue to do things that continues the pattern.
Body Falls into a Rut- Your body often falls into a rut after following the same routine for too long. When your body gets “immune” to your routine, it will stop allowing you to lose weight and can even cause you to gain weight if you don’t recognize the problem and reverse it. The best way to reverse it is to change the routine that you have been doing. Do different exercises to shock your body into losing weight again.
Dieting and exercise are the only ways to truly lose weight and keep it off. It is frustrating when you start to gain weight instead of losing weight when you really haven’t changed anything about the things you are doing. Identifying the reasons why you are gaining rather than losing weight will help you figure out what you can do to get back on the weight loss track.
