Unwanted hair growth in female is mostly caused by disorders or diseases. It is a very uncomfortable situation to be in as it deprives you of your right to freedom as a woman. This condition can be caused by a lot of factors ranging from environmental to genetics. When there is increases androgen (male sex hormone known as testosterone) production by the ovaries, there will be terminal hair growth in places where they are not supposed to be. The adrenal gland produces both male and female hormones but when disease like tumor hits it, it alters the production by either overproduction or underproduction of hormones. When there is low level of estrogen in women, it provides testosterone the opportunity to go to flood around the body thereby increasing hair growth. When either of these glands (ovary or adrenal glands) over-produces their respective androgens, it can result in unwanted hair growth. The cause is more often the fault of the ovaries than the adrenal glands, but there are several recognized instances where the adrenal gland causes such problems.

There are treatment options for unwanted hair growth in female that can help make life comfortable for you. Hirsutism also known as female facial hair growth which is obviously an unwanted hair growth can be treated by physically removing hair or with the use of drugs that can help reduce androgen levels. Taking oral contraceptives and the diuretic spironolactin are commonly prescribed for this condition. Sometimes, even when taken together, help to suppress androgen production and reduce new hair growth, but they do not eliminate existing hair. They drugs take time before showing results about six months. Most of the drugs that are used for treating unwanted hair growth may have side effect. The side effects of one the drugs Spirinolactone include having irregular menstrual cycle. Other medications used for treating unwanted hair growth include finasteride and flutamide. If flutamide is taking excessively or in high does, it can lead to liver toxicity. As said earlier, most of the drugs have side effects like that of finasteride treatment are few and include liver enzyme abnormalities. You should also know that these drugs should not be taken when pregnant as they have adverse effects on male unborn babies. There is also an FDA approved treatment known as the topical prescription cream for the suppression of facial hair.
