Carmelo Anthony trade rumors are really bubbling now. The Carmelo Anthony Trade rumors come from the Denver Post, as the Denver Nuggets try to convince Anthony to sign a long-term contract extension to remain with the team. Anthony is heading into his final year under contract with the Denver Nuggets, and the 26-year-old small forward is just now entering his prime years as an NBA star. That seems to have the Denver Nuggets worried about losing Anthony for nothing in return, and has the Denver Post alluding to the fact that the Nuggets may be forced to trade Anthony quite soon.
These Carmelo Anthony trade rumors come as a huge surprise, because nothing about Anthony has been mentioned during the huge free agent period that is about to open. The Denver Nuggets have already offered a three-year, $65 million contract extension to Anthony in order to get him to sign on the dotted line, but he hasn’t shown a lot of interest in getting the contract done. Anthony can opt out of this contract at the end of the 2010-11 NBA season, making him a free agent that can sign with any team in the NBA. If that happened, Anthony would suddenly become the big name free agent of the 2011 offseason.
There are other things that can be considered in this situation, including Carmelo Anthony playing college basketball in New York, a place where he might want to go next offseason. If the New York Knicks are able to secure a couple of big name players this offseason, they could also be primed to make a run at Anthony during the next free agency period. This is not what the Denver Nuggets want at all, and really need to offer a max deal with six years on the table as soon as possible. If they can’t get him to sign that contract extension really soon though, maybe the Nuggets do need to try and get the most value possible for Anthony in a trade.
It’s interesting that these rumors of trading Anthony are coming up now, but what the Denver Nuggets have to do is get Anthony to sign before the July 8th free agent signing period begins. The thing that the Nuggets have to fear right now is a team missing out on the big names this season, because they might then focus their eyes on getting Carmelo Anthony next season. What if New York fails to get a major free agent this offseason? They will then pull out all the stops to get Anthony that maximum deal in 2011. The time is now for Denver to get something done, and for the sake of that franchise, they need to give Carmelo Anthony anything and everything he wants.
