When visiting or residing in Albany, New York the most common question always asked is “what is there to do there?”
Albany bars never fail for those who want a brew after work or for those who want to root on their favorite teams at the bar. There are several great sports bars in the Albany vicinity and I have compiled a list of the top 5 in the area.
On the historic Lark Street there sits a bar known as Legends. There are large television screens decorating the walls here so the game is never missed. The downstairs floor is strictly a bar, but the next floor up you can sit down and eat while still watching the game. During March Madness, Legends is a popular spot since Cinderella team, Siena College is just a short drive away. Crowds gather in front of the televisions while still in close proximity to the bar and viewers will have no problem seeing the large screens.
Next on the list is The Stadium, located in Saratoga Springs, NY. The Stadium is typically more so a restaurant rather than a bar right on the main strip known as Broadway. The walls are lined with sports items and there is a good amount of jockey and horse racing memorabilia as the Saratoga racetrack is right up the street. The bar in the Stadium is a large one that takes up an entire end of the restaurant with plenty of televisions throughout so you can watch your favorite team at your closest view. There is also outdoor seating here, although you won’t be able to see the games, it is still a nice atmosphere and on the weekends you are sure not to miss out on some live street tunes.
The Recovery Room is a widely known sports bar in the area. The title reflects no meaning of sports whatsoever and instead you may be inclined to think you belong there for other reasons that involve drinking a few too many brews each night. However, the original location is adjacent to a hospital, Albany Medical Center. There is no possible way anyone could miss a game at this place due to the excessive amount of televisions lining the walls. If you choose to eat here, there are even remotes on each table where you can turn up the volume to match the TV closest to your table showing the Yankees massacring the Red Sox or referee’s blowing more calls during the World Cup. A second recovery room has just recently opened which is located on Hoosick Street in Troy, NY just around the corner from RPI.
A secret gem called The Sports Grill in East Greenbush is just a short drive away from Albany, literally over the Hudson River off of Exit 9. This is a great place to be on a warm summer’s night. The views here are absolutely spectacular where you can see the entire Albany skyline in a perfect panoramic view while on the outside deck. The great thing about this restaurant and bar is that there is actually an outdoor bar on the deck sporting the great views and drink specials that you wouldn’t believe. These specials usually consist of draft beers 2 for 1, for $2.30! Instead of Coors Light, these specials can be drafts that consist of good beers for example, from a local Troy brewery, Brown’s Brewery offering Oatmeal Stout and Cherry Raspberry.
Finally always the best for last is Wolff’s Biergarten or otherwise known as ‘The Beer Garden’. Picnic tables and peanut shells make up this German style bar. The beers are served in abnormally large glasses ranging from international dopplebocks to lagers. If it’s your birthday, for a $40 deposit (that you get back), you can shoot the boot! This is the place to be in the Capital Region for the World Cup. Fans of all sorts and just beer drinkers alone root on their favorite teams in flooded crowds feeling as International as the next person.
Whether you want to pretend your tailgating at the World Cup or just want to watch the Yankees game after work, hopefully these suggested bars will fulfill your drinking needs the next time you want to grab one for the game while in Albany.
