I was scrolling through Yahoo Green today, and came across the adorable story of Marisa Lynch. Laid-off from her job, bored and a bit depressed, Marisa Lynch saw the move Julie & Julie, and decided to emulate Julie by doing one thing a day that made her feel good. So Marisa decided to create new clothes for herself, But, when you’re unemployed, there’s not much you can do on hardly any money so, instead of buying fabric and accessories, Marisa began to shop at thrift stores and garage sales. She bought ugly dresses at $1 each and set herself a goal – create a new dress every day for a year by upcycling an old dress into something wearable, while only spending $1 a day. Now 261 days into her project, and with 105 days and $106 left, Marisa’s blog ‘New Dress a Day’ tells her story.
When you hear about a blog showcasing dresses made from thrift store and garage sale clothing, you might think some of the clothes on there would be pretty ugly. You’d be correct if you look at all of the clothing Marisa Lynch bought to create her new dresses from, but not if you look at the ‘after’ photos. From cute cocktail dresses to dresses perfect for a summer picnic, shirts to wear to a baseball game or slinky, sexy numbers for a night out clubbing, Marisa’s new creations are gorgeous.
On her blog, New Dress a Day, Marisa Lynch puts up a photo of herself first wearing the hideous dress she’s just bought at a thrift store or garage sale. Then, in photos, she shows you step by step what she did to create a fashionable piece of clothing from a monstrous beginning.
But, not finished, Marisa then shows photos of herself wearing her newly-created clothing, as well as photos of celebrities wearing similar things, or photos of models in magazines in things sometimes not even as cute as what Marisa is creating.
To add the icing on the cake, Marisa adds pictures on each blog post of her wearing the dress, what event it was perfect for, then shows herself at the event with friends and family, wearing the new dress. Partying in West LA with friends, going to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, eating dinner at home, or even at a baseball game – every outfit she’s created is perfect for the occasion.
So, if you’re broke, tired of wearing the same clothing and looking for something cool to wear, pop over to Marisa Lynch’s blog and take a few pages out of her book. In today’s bad economy, you don’t have to spend a fortune to look great and to have something new to wear every day. Marisa Lynch and her ‘New Dress a Day’ idea is wonderful evidence of that.
