As I try to explain to people my political and religious views I start to get frustrated. Liberals love my atheism, but the second I talk about my political views I am looked at as a hill Billy. When I talk to conservatives, my political views are applauded. When I bring up religion however, I am looked down upon as the spawn of Satan. I can’t help to be perplexed by people’s reaction to me. I understand the plight liberal democrat theists face as it seems that the right wants to have a monopoly on faith. However, the same monopoly exists when it comes to the left and atheism. There is an expectation that being an athirst automatically makes you a socialist left wing immoral individual. I plan to change that.
I believe that many atheists use atheism in a similar way that theists use god. Atheism serves as a crutch that you can put all your personal responsibility and morality. You can justify immorality and antisocial behavior by justifying it with relative morality. Atheism is used to justify confiscatory taxation and other socialist programs as the lack of god given property rights give us the right to cut successful people down to size. Many atheists will try to say that they do not use atheism as an excuse for immorality, but it is hard to believe that all atheists including the smelly unwashed hippie types actually know anything about cosmology, biology or any other scientific theory that contradicts the existence of god.
It is truly hypocritical that atheists love to take on Christianity and throw prayer out of schools, yet when a person is told to take off their Islamic headscarf for a driver license picture the left and atheists are up in arms. This leads me to believe that some atheists may have become atheist not out of enlightenment, but out of political correctness. They do not want to be considered homophobic or any other bigoted trait associated with Christians so they become atheists. This brand of atheism is just as comforting as Christianity can be for its believers. It seems as if evolution is the theory to contradict religion, but the second evolution is applied to humanity many atheists are up in arms.
Although liberalism may work in theory it has failed in every example observed. It leads to a bankruptcy of society. This begs the question; will conservatism have to throw off its religions roots to be successful in politics in the 21st century? Are there thousands of atheists like myself who are closet atheist or closet conservatives for fear of not being accepted in either group?
