Lately Microsoft has been on a run and delivering smiles to the faces of Xbox 360 fans all across the globe. While Xbox fans are happy with their new toys, they haven’t forgotten the past. Is it possible for the Xbox 360 to go from the most problematic gaming console, to the best gaming system ever?
Microsoft has been on a campaign to breathe new life into the Xbox 360 console. The new Xbox 360S console has been launched, Xbox Kinect is on its way, new Xbox 360 flash drives have replaced the Microsoft Memory Units of Xbox 360 past, and Halo: Reach is set to launch soon and with it a new and “blinged” out Xbox 360S Limited Edition console will hit the shelves – with matching controllers. In addition to the cool new toys Microsoft is throwing at Xbox 360 fans, they’ve been blessing fans with cool software updates and I’ve noticed lots of great discounts on Xbox Live and Microsoft Points popping up all the time.
Microsoft is treating Xbox 360 fans like royalty at the moment, but this hasn’t always been the case. In the past the Xbox 360 has been one the most problematic gaming consoles of all times. The Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death – RRoD – has killed thousands of Xbox 360s and was caused by poor console development by Microsoft – giving the original Xbox 360 a failure rate of 54.2%. In addition to minor problem of having more than half the Xbox 360s ever sold in history fail due to RRoD – sarcasm – Microsoft refuses to add Blu-Ray after HD DVD went under, there are still backward compatibility issues with original Xbox console games, and original Xbox 360 owners have no option to add an HDMI out unless they purchased an Xbox 360 in the last year or so.
It surprising that the same console that was as problematic as its been in the past is the same console that’s filling Xbox 360 fans with as much glee as they are in the present. Depending on how well the Xbox Kinect performs, Microsoft might be able to pull off a “180” and totally take the gaming world by storm. Halo: Reach, by itself, has me feeling like a little kid again, and I’m sure my kids will get a kick out of Kinect this Christmas. If Microsoft keeps on the “good foot” I’ll forgive the transgressions of the past. Nintendo and Sony better watch their backs.
