Pistachios are said to prevent stress. They are believed to have a lot of health benefits, including lowering blood pressure and cholesterol and even preventing some types of cancer. So many foods are being studied in the treatment of various conditions, it is hard to keep up. Can pistachios actually reduce stress?
Study About Eating Pistachios to Reduce Stress. Penn State studied pistachios’ effects on stress. Researchers used three groups for the study. All three groups consumed the same number of calories each day on a heart healthy diet with 8% saturated fat. One group was allowed 25% total fat intake, the second 35% total fat with the addition of 1.5 ounces pistachios daily, and the third 34% total fat with 3 ounces of pistachios.
After giving subjects both a physical and a psychological test, researchers found that those who ate pistachios, in either size serving, had a reduced blood pressure due to relaxation of the arteries. The study says nothing about reducing stress itself, just that pistachios can help reduce high blood pressure as an effect of stress.
How Does Lowering Blood Pressure Help Reduce Stress? The study didn’t show that pistachios actually reduce stress, but the effects of stress on the body. By lowering your blood pressure in general, eating pistachios daily can keep your blood pressure from getting too high during the adrenaline rush of stressful situations.
So if you eat at least 1.5 ounces of pistachios every day, you may actually keep your blood pressure lower when experiencing both short term and long term stress. Even short bursts of high blood pressure can negatively affect your health.
Should I Add Pistachios to My Diet to Reduce Stress? Nothing was proven that pistachios reduce stress, just some of the physical effects that experiencing stress creates. If your blood pressure tends to go up during stressful situations, it wouldn’t hurt to add pistachios to your diet. They may actually keep your blood pressure down when you begin to experience stress.
According to an article in PR Newswire, better ways to reduce stress include exercising at least 3 times a week, eating whole foods rather than processed and spending quality time with people you care about.
There is nothing wrong with adding pistachios as a part of a healthy diet. Pistachios have protein, healthy fats and fiber which can all keep you from getting hungry between meals which can lend to weight loss. Just remember, not one food alone is a cure-all for anything. But adding pistachios to a healthy diet can reduce the affects of stress on your body.
