MTV’s Jersey Shore fans may have yet another reason to crow about and cheer on one of the most popular reality TV show cast members. Nicole ‘Snooki’ Polizzi sports a huge poof – poofy hairdo – which is her hairy trademark. It’s an undeniably unforgettable look. There’s even Facebook pages devoted to it. Believe it or not, Snooki’s hair may help British Petroleum clean up the crude oil that’s polluting the Gulf of Mexico.
No, I’m not being cheeky, at least not entirely so. Human hair can and does clean up oil spills. The hair raising practice is proven. It’s been implemented in the field for years. Since BP can’t seem to solve the huge oil leak which massively pollutes coastal waters of the United States of America, perhaps a hairstyle as thickly, powerful as one paraded by Snooki can help ease the devastating cost of this terrible ecological disaster.
The hair raising idea was hatched by – what else – a hairstylist. Phil McCory of Huntsville, Alabama watched coverage of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. In particular, he was struck by how difficult the clean-up volunteers found the process of cleaning oil covered otters. McCory thought, “If animal hair can trap and hold spilled oil, why can’t human hair?” He snatched a pair of his wife’s nylons, stuffed them with five pounds of human hair, and dunked it into his baby son’s pool full of water and used motor oil. After two minutes of deep soaking, it was retrieved. To McCory’s delight, the water now sparkled perfectly clear of oil. His hair oil sponge – now called an OttiMat – performed perfectly.
Now another Alabama resident busily battles oil pollution with long, absorbent locks of hair. Amanda Bacon of Fairhope, Alabama is working with OttiMat to prevent that sticky oil from washing ashore and spoiling their coastline. “It’s so simple, it’s amazing,” Bacon said. “Here is a natural solution that drinks oil that we should utilize. We know how to prepare for hurricanes by boarding up windows and gathering water. There are no instructions to prepare for this, and people are scared.”
Bacon makes ‘hair booms’ – basically pantyhose full of human hair – which can be floated on the water to trap oil. BP has contacted her about possibly using them. So, Snooki, if you read this, give Amanda Bacon a call. With your perky poof, you can supply quite a lot of hair for the clean-up cause.
