A roof garden is becoming a popular way to have all of the essential aspects of a garden in an urban or city location. A roof garden is very popular in bigger metropolitan areas where space and lawn gardens are rare and where industry thrives. More commercial properties are turning to a roof garden to control temperature and the air quality in the city limits while providing a great location for people to hang out at. A rooftop garden is exactly that, a garden on the top of a roof. With more people trying to build a rooftop garden it takes some skill and practice to develop a watering system to nourish the garden. One way to properly take care of your roof garden and provide it with enough water is to make an irrigation system. A drip irrigation system is one of the easiest ways to get water to your rooftop garden without overpowering the plants. If you are thinking about starting a rooftop garden but are not sure how to go about a drip system then here is an easy guide to help you install it.
In order to build and install a drip system for your roof garden you are going to need some simple tools and materials. You are going to need quarter-inch tubing, pressure regulator, back-flow preventer, drill, half-inch drill bit and three-inch drill bit, scissors, twist tie, flower nutrients and plumber’s tape. The materials you need include items such as a small stake, tape measure, water, drill, net pot, tight-fitting lid, 5 gallon bucket, timer, emitter, pressure regulator and a garden pump. You can find all of these items at your local home improvement store and it will cost you about 150 dollars for everything. This might look like a lot of materials which could make the installation seem time-consuming but it really is fairly easy. The whole entire rooftop drip system should take you no more than a couple of hours to complete.
The first thing you want to do to build a drip system for your roof garden is to get the Dutch bucket ready. A Dutch pot will help you avoid carrying all of the buckets of water up to the roof by creating a water reservoir. Use the 5-gallon bucket for this step and you should drill holes in the side of the lid with the one-inch drill bit. There needs to be a hole in the center of the lid using the three-inch drill bit. Fill the bucket with about two-thirds of water and include any flower nutrients you want to add to the drip system. Put the garden pump on the bottom of the bucket and then take the power cord through the one-inch hole you drilled in the lid. Then you need to measure and cut one and a half feet of tubing and attach it to the garden pump. The other end of the tubing should be pushed through the one-inch hole where the power cord is located. The lid should be attached back onto the bucket but not secured yet.
The next part of building your roof garden drip system is to actually create the drip system. The drip system will maintain a certain pressure so that there are no blown lines or a reversal in the amount of pressure. The tubing you threaded through the bucket should be attached to the back-flow preventer. Measure and cut a 10-inch piece of the tubing and attach it to the pressure regulator. The other end of the tubing should be attached to the drip emitter at this point. Place the lid on the bucket if you have not done so and place the net pot with the seeds in it on the top of the lid. This should be done where the three-inch hole is located on the lid and then you need to insert the stake. Attach the stake to the drip emitter and then secure it together with a twist tie and wrap plumber’s tape around the tubing and connector of the flow-back preventer. If you have more than one type of drip system you need then all you have to do is add t-connectors to the pipes. If you add the t-connectors along with more pipe and tubing it will allow you to add more plants to the rooftop garden drip system. It would also be a good idea if you added more plants to the rooftop garden to use a bigger bucket since you will be using more water. The bucket will be located on the floor of the roof while the plants and flowers will be above it and will use a connecting tube for recycling the water.
The last step to build your drip system for the rooftop garden is to finish the small tasks and run the drip system. You need to plug the garden pump into the timer and then plug that into an outlet either inside or outside of the rooftop. You should set the timer so that you can water your rooftop garden at specific intervals throughout the day. Now what will happen is the pump will put the water into the tubing and it will release into the pot. This is what waters the plants and then gravity forces the water to drip back down into the bucket and the cycle keeps continuing over and over. This is why it is called a drip system because the point of it is to create a way to run the water through the plant and have it drip back into the bucket for reuse. If you placed flower nutrients or fertilizer into the water supply you should refill it every three or four weeks for optimal plant nutrition.
