Planning on renovating or remodeling your bathroom? It can be a challenging and rewarding project for any DIY guru. Drawing plans and bringing them to completion is one thing, but keeping under budget can quickly become a stressful nightmare, completely destroying your well thought out plans.
If blueprints and a well laid out plan is the key to solving a bathroom renovation, then a well laid out budget that is compatible with your blueprints is the lock. Without a good starting plan, contingency plan and cost breakdown, you’re very likely to cut corners on certain aspects of your bathroom renovation.
A cost breakdown is the term used to show individual prices of each section of the bathroom renovation in materials and labor. This allows us to see an accurate picture of how the job will progress, both in costs and labor time.
A cost breakdown list that I use consists of over 100 specific items that are used in building or remodeling a home. While you don’t really need to use that large of a cost breakdown list, a bathroom renovation does have many extras that can require an extensive list. Breakdown the list into jobs, then the jobs into individual components. Now take each component and assign the sections materials, estimated labor and the costs.
Now that the cost breakdown is complete, you can begin to draw up a starting plan. Apply each component from the cost breakdown list into a chronological list. Usually I transfer this directly to a large desk calendar and computer files. This allows me to accurately estimate a time frame for the job.
Of course, something always goes wrong. The time estimate is exactly that, an estimate. During the course of the bathroom renovation project, make adjustments to the starting plan as needed. Just keep in mind; you have to bump everything on the calendar back for every other project component you move. It can get complicated, that’s why I always have a contingency plan.
It’s always good to have backup. That’s why a contingency plan is always good to have on the back burner in case something goes wrong during the bathroom renovation project.
Planning for emergencies are impossible, but being ready for one is smart business. If an unexpected pipe bursts during construction, it’s going to cost you. Knowing in advance which components of the projects budget you are able to shift to other components of the projects budget, can help make or break nay construction project.
