Sunday night on ABC’s Brothers and Sisters, the Walker’s had a major shake up when a collision with a huge rig put several family members in jeopardy. But will any of the characters really be killed off the series?
It’s been no secret that actor Rob Lowe planned to leave Brother and Sisters at the end of this season. Lowe plays Senator Robert McCallister, the husband of Kitty Walker (Calista Flockhart) on the show. With a storyline that showed McCallister in some political hot water- and also dealing with a serious heart condition- many fans assumed he’d be killed off the show via a heart attack.
Instead, the entire family was involved in a gruesome, multi-vehicle car accident, with Robert being one of the most seriously injured. But not so fast-let’s not assume that the character of Robert McCallister is dead.
According to EOnline, Rob Lowe requested that his character die, but whether he actually dies remains to be seen (okay, he looked pretty dead to me, but there hasn’t been a funeral yet). And while it’s true that Lowe has already joined the cast of the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation, it’s also true that ABC wants to keep him on board.
Back in January, TV Guide reported that ABC president Steve McPherson said the network would love to keep Lowe at ABC and that they were “in talks” with him. Could this pave the way for some cameos, a la Balthazar Getty’s character? Or is Robert actually dead?
What’s interesting is that the Brothers and Sisters plotlines will fast forward one year ahead when the show comes back for Season 5 next fall. That paves the way for a lot of plot twists and story line changes.
Justin Walker (Dave Annabel) was planning to volunteer in Haiti for a year, so he may be about done with his service when we see him again. And Saul (Ron Rifkin), who just learned that he is HIV positive, could possibly be sick. As for Holly Harper (Patricia Wettig)-well, after the car accident she looked about as dead as Rob Lowe’s character, so her unexpected demise could be still another plotline shocker.
The ABC promo for the finale teased that “one of their own is not coming back”, but that doesn’t carry a lot of weight with me. They’ve teased us before like that- in season 3, when they ran promos saying that there would be a death and it turned out that Robert had a heart attack (okay, he flatlined for a minute, but he still survived). So I won’t believe anything until the Season 5 premiere.
One thing that’s for sure? Ojai Foods is kaput and the Walker’s are now in the water business.
Brothers and Sisters resumes next fall on ABC- with or without Rob Lowe.
