How did I get to know one of the most famous criminal in history? It is quite the story, one that is long. I will tell you the shortened version of this story about the man who kidnapped Elizabeth Smart .
Who was Brian David Mitchell? He claimed to be a prophet of God, a man with purpose, a man with a future. I met him while living on a ranch in Idaho when I was 16-17 years old. He parked a trailer on the property I was also living on and lived there for a period of time.
When I first met Brian we immediately hit it off. He seemed to be a very knowledgeable and interesting person, telling me tales of how he had healed people and animals with, what he called, lymphology . He told me that lymphology was the art of healing with rubbing. He said he would spend hours, days, or even weeks rubbing a patient for hours upon hours, taking shifts with his wife so that he could sleep.
I saw first hand what he could do and it was very impressive. Brian’s dog had broken her leg, and he disappeared into his trailer for a few days. Later, I saw his dog walking around on all four legs like no mishap had ever occurred. It was quite the accomplishment as far as I was concerned.
Brian seemed like such a nice guy that it was shocking to hear him occasionally yelling as his wife in their small travel trailer. It was so loud and he seemed to have so much anger in his voice. But who was I to judge? I did not know his marital problems, and besides the odd yelling frenzies in his trailer he never raised his voice otherwise.
As time went on we starting hanging out together quite a bit. He would come and help me milk cows every morning at 5:30. He was very helpful and it was nice to have someone to visit with while I was doing chores.
Brian never seemed to dwell in the past, he barley ever talked about his past accept for the occasional healing story. He was very much in the present, talking only about what he was going to do today and would rarely talk about tomorrow.
Brian was a fundamental Mormon and he believed that he would someday become a God himself. I, being raised in the somewhat same religion, at the time, thought it all seemed all fine and dandy.
Knowing him from the past, I think that he probably really did believe that God told him to kidnap Elizabeth Smart and make her his wife for eternity. To be clear, however, I don’t believe God told him to do it, but that he was a man possessed.
I do not believe that what he did was right, and he needs to be punished for his crimes. Brian was recently found guilty of the crime and has been sentenced to life in prison.
It is hard to believe, and it’s shocking who you might meet in your life and what kind of impact they may have on you. Making the right choices and being a good person is within reach for all of us. We should do our best to be good people, with clear minds, and true hearts .
