I frequently tell people to adopt instead of buy and the response that I can often is that they want a purebred dog. They want an English Bulldog, German Shepherd, or Labrador Retriever. Well the thing is there are lots of breed specific rescues in Arizona that do have the purebred dog you are looking for.
If you are considering getting a purebred you want to keep in mind that they are usually more expensive to keep as a pet. Purebred dogs are usually prone to more health conditions due to their genetics and usually cost more to buy or even adopt. However, the adoption option will be much more affordable than buying a purebred.
Most breed specific rescues also have many more qualifications than picking up a dog from the pound. However, this is good. Most of these rescue groups require that you fill out an application, have a house check completed, allow follow up phone calls, and a variety of other things. While this may seem like a lot of work they have the dog’s best interest in mind. They want to make sure that they are adopting the dog to a good family who will take care of them for the rest of their lives.
A good thing about adopting from one of these rescue organization is that they are not large, which gives them more time to focus on each of the dogs. Most of the dogs in these rescue groups live in foster care until they are adopted. Having more time to spend with the dogs and having them live in foster care rather than in a cage usually means you are getting a much better behaved dog. Don’t let this discourage you from rescuing from a shelter though, as I have three rescued dogs and they all behave very well. A little training, which can be really simple, goes a long way in making a great dog.
Here is a list of some breed specific rescues and shelters and the types of dogs that they have.
