Boy Scouts always have a sense of pride for their troop, peers, family and friends and take the values they learn from their scouting experiences seriously. Respecting each other is one of the values boys will learn from their time as a scout. So what better way to show pride for your troop and friends by making Pride Pins and a Pride Yarn Bug as souvenirs from a scout camping trip. This craft is easy to put together and is great for keeping, or giving away to fellow scouts and family as a way of showing respect and friendship.
Pride Pins:
Materials You Will Need –
Small Safety Pins
Colorful Pony Beads
Letter Beads or Number Beads
Several Strands of 18″ Satin Cord
Instructions to Make the Pins –
First you will need to take one piece of the satin cord and fold it in half. Next you will half hitch it to a safety pin by placing the folded end down through the pin and drawing the cord ends down through the folded end loop.
Next, string the top bead onto both cords and push up to the safety pin. This will be the base of the pin and will hold the cord firm for the rest of the beads. You will be lacing the first row of three beads onto one cord. Lace the other cord through the same beads in reverse order. Pull both cords snugly to hold the beads in place firmly. Continue with the next row of three beads until you have laced the five rows. If using the number or letter beads just alternate one of those beads in place of a colored bead.
String the bottom bead onto both cords and push up to the last row. Tie off the ends and trim any access cord.
Pride Yarn Bug:
Materials You Will Need –
Pattern for a pair of Jumbo Hands and a scouts Cap
Pattern for Jumbo Bug Feet
Foam Den Numbers
Blue & Yellow Yarn
One Blue & Three Yellow Sheets of Craft Foam
Large Miniature Cap
Two Wiggle Eyes — 35mm
One Blue Jumbo Pipe Cleaners
6″ Styrofoam Ball
Heavy Cardboard cut to a 9″ Square
Tacky Glue
Scissors
Low Temp Glue Gun
Instructions to Make the Yarn Bug –
To start with you will need to make what looks like a pompom by wrapping yarn around the cardboard as least 200 times. You can mix the yarn colors any way you would like.
Next you will need to cut a 9″ piece of yarn and slide it under wrapped yarn. Tie this piece tightly into a double knot. Turn the floppy pompom over and cut completely through the yarn on this side. Turn the yarn pompom sideways and smooth down the strands.
Next take the 6″ styrofoam ball and slice the bottom off enough so it stands on end without falling over. Cover the top and sides of the ball with tacky glue. Separate the strands of the pompon to fit the Styrofoam ball up inside. Press pompon into place and arrange the yarn.
Trace a pattern for the Jumbo Hands, Cap and the Jumbo Bug Feet using blue foam or cloth. Cut two hands out of the foam or cloth. Cut two feet out of yellow foam or cloth and glue the feet to the bottom of the styrofoam ball. Cut the front piece of the hat out of yellow and a diamond out of blue. Cut a piece of yellow foam or cloth 2½” x 9″ for a den banner and glue on your den numbers or any small message you want. Bend fingers of the hands around the banner and use a glue gun to secure the fingers. Cut pipe cleaner in half.
Next glue a half of pipe cleaner to the back of each hand. Bend the pipe cleaner arms and poke them into the styrofoam ball. Use the glue gun to glue the bottom edge of the yellow cap front to the blue cap. Glue the back top to the cap and finish with the blue diamond. Glue the and eyes to the yarn bug’s head.
